Many citizens inhabiting some of the most developed cities and states in the United States tend to have very little knowledge on what kind of life people in the South live. To their dismay, the ideas or plain imagination they would have about the South might be utterly wrong. For example, many teenagers in the central states of United States get by with their routine of going for shopping sprees and getting good jobs. A visit to the South may show less of this, which would not necessarily mean that life out there is by any means “sub-standard” or is not quite “middle” class level.

Research has shown that one major commodity associated with the South is food, a commodity vital for the survival of any human being. Since time in memorial, food has always been central in the South (Ferris 16). For millions and millions of human population living in various parts of the continent, their back-bone of food mainly lies on the South. It is from here that farming and other procedures leading to production of food for the citizens’ consumption lay. Research also shows that the South carries with it a sense of place, a sense of family and a sense of memory (Ayers 227).

Majority of the citizens inhabiting various states in America have their backgrounds relating to the South. For example, you may find a young couple in the city of New York, whose folks live in Southern parts of America. How would we support the idea that just by the virtue of food in general coming from the South, science and research basically have gained positively in the United States? The study and research of food as a discipline in American colleges and university has rapidly grown. Studies such as anthropology, agronomy, nutrition and many more have grown and led to major scientific developments, all having risen from farming practices in the South (Latshaw 108).

This has grown to the heights of recently announced Doctor of Philosophy program in food anthropology in major universities all around the country. However, nothing can ever be declared perfect. With these praises about the South, comes the other side which does not quite agree with prior ideas on matters pertaining the South. Research has shown concrete evidence linking the South to various other issues. Back in the days, the music industry at one time communicated vulgar messages to its listeners, this tarnishing a good reputation that the South had maintained (Hamilton 169).

Moreover, lower civilization standards of the South often have a poor replication on their children as these kids may go out in search of fun and in the process will tarnish the reputation on the South. Shifting attention to understand the other side of the South and possibly learn some truth about it. In what could be termed to as “low” culture of the South, research has revealed various important issues (Ayers 231). Common citizens in other parts tend to view a selected minority or rather judge them negatively due to some following highlighted reasons.

Posing the question, “which reasons exactly?”, an example of where for instance a 10 year old boy growing up in the city and gets to visit his grandparents in the South while on summer vacation. It’s while they are in the South, where ones in a while war breaks out in the neighborhood and it’s not even safe to be out late at night unlike in the city where Mike even in his early age
