Issues covered in this book are based on research from the late nineteenth century to the twentieth century. It is worth noting that, prostitution was authorized in Argentina (Guy, 1991). The other core issues is that, the effect of female sexual commerce or trade on families was widespread thus it caused fear and anxieties. The author explores many aspects of the discussions that follow the increased demand for prostitute by Europeans and argentines immigrants in general (Guy, 1991). Guy has further supported his argument by looking at the prevalent fear of slavery, she call it “white slavery”, the advantages of medically supervised motels for prostitutions, the rights of the local authorities or governments to restrict and reinforce the civil rights of citizens and foreigners, censorship that is associated with writings and music dealing with the predicament of prostitutes and the possible criminality of women who could abandon their families while working as prostitutes (Guy, 1991).

The author does a tremendous amount of work, while describing the attempts made to deal with female prostitution: therapy, modifications of the prostitutions laws, and the medical programs that are available to help prevent the spreading of (sexual transmitted diseases) and venereal diseases (Guy, 1991). The author makes it crystal clear that, the treatment of marginalized women by politicians, and medical physicians has contributed to oppression and censorships of these unaccepted social clusters.

Through the authors study on how the local and national government in Argentina handled these women, we will be able to see the vital associations between gender, politic and commerce (Guy, 1991). Synopsis of the Book Through the book, the authors continue to provide a significant contribution to the study of how marginalized member of the society have helped in defining social, economic, and political tolerability. We can thus say, the author’s goal in the book was to show the relationship of female members in the society who are involved in sexual commerce to the family disintegration in Argentina (Guy, 1991).

She goes ahead and offers a very readable analysis of prostitution in Argentina and Europe from the nineteenth century to the twentieth century. Her arguments on issues like the tango are based form the perspective of the underworld prostitutes, bordellos, and the rise of white slavery rings and merchants (Guy, 1991). A sneak peak in chapter two of the book we also see that she has successfully reconstructed the Argentine state during its promising moments in history and its management of gender issues (Guy, 1991).

In these monographs, it is worth noting that they do not demean men or women for that matter. Nevertheless, her (the author) focuses our concentration to the Porteno working classes and the reader get a chance to understand their social cultural worlds, thus she is able to demonstrate how government officials in Buenos Aires public did understand, crafted and acted on the customary gender ideologies (Guy, 1991). This makes it one of the first books to explorer sexuality issues in Latin America.
