Project Plan: Obesity Health Promotion Name Course Institutional Affiliation Date Introduction As in the rest of the world, chronic disease such as obesity is currently a major issue among the residents of Australia. Obesity is common among individuals of all gender and age but mainly affects women and children. Obesity results to various chronic diseases such as stroke, heart diseases, diabetes, hypertension and cancers. These diseases are the major causes of death in the world presently. Pacific countries are currently experiencing the highest obesity prevalence in the world. In Australia, the disease is mainly common among adult females though recent studies have showed an increase in the obesity cases among teenagers. Social-cultural factors are the main contributors to the high prevalence rates of obesity specifically in Australia. These factors mainly influence the eating habits of the population O'Dea and Eriksen (2010). Consumption of processed food is another social factor known to cause obesity among the Australian population. An intervention and health promotion activity should therefore consider the factors that contribute to the high levels of obesity in the society. The program should focus in educating the society on various methods of preventing and reducing obesity cases in the country. The plan focuses on the process and activities to be carried out during the health promotion process. The activities range from educating the society on healthy diets, the resources that will be utilised during the process and the partners if any that facilitated the process. The plan mainly focuses on health promotion aimed at reducing obesity prevalence in Australia among adults Paperny (2011). Project Statement To undertake an innovation in chronic disease (Obesity): health education, promotion, prevention and management among adults in Australia so as to reduce the prevalence of obesity in the society. Expected Outcome The expected outcome of the project is a reduction of obesity cases among adults in Australia. Obesity health promotion project is expected to influence the eating habits, exercises and medical inputs habits among Australian adults. These results in minimal obesity cases among adults and children given the fact that children tend to imitate their parent’s behaviours. The project expects to foresee improvement of dietary habits among Australian families since it focuses on the adults. The project is also expected to impact greatly on the rate of consumption of processed food in Australia and at the same time increase the number of families consuming home cooked food. The number of adults participating in outdoor and indoor exercises is expected to increase in the community as a result of the health promotion project. Obesity related data in Australia More than half of adults (54.3%) and one third teens (34.4%) in Australia are obese in 2014 In Edelman, In Mandle, and In Kudzma (2014). Obesity rates are high among low income groups and immigrants adults in Australia. For example, research shows that, seventy per cent of immigrants from Asian countries are obese compared to forty percent Australians. In the last six years, the rates of obesity has been stable among Australians but has increased tremendously by six percent among immigrants. Research also indicates that, majority of Australians affected by obesity come from low-income families while majority of the migrants affected originate from Asian countries. Obesity is reported as the major contributor to other chronic diseases and deaths in Australia. Heart disease is one of the major causes of death in Australia as of 2013 in addition to stroke and Type 2 diabetes Clark and Paraska (2013). With reference to such cases, fifty percent of heart diseases occurred among migrant adults while thirty percent among Australian adults. The remaining twenty percent was seen among teenagers and children above ten years old. This clearly indicates that, obesity is the major cause of heart disease given that it occurs in adults who are mainly affected by heart related diseases. Goal of the Project The project goal is to raise awareness on the effects of increased consumption of soft drinks: the benefits of physical activities, regular health checks, and healthy diets so as to promote healthier choices, regular exercises, and check-ups. Objectives of the Project 1. All families and adults engaged in the health promotion project will be educated on the benefits of eating healthy foods as compared to processed fatty food. The individuals will learn on the various healthy diets available which can be utilised by the individuals. They will also learn on the several of effects of unhealthy eating including obesity. 2. All the adults participating in the project will be able to identify the various health diets including the methods of preparing healthy food for the family. The individuals will also be able to identify the various proportions of ingredients required for preparation of the meals. 3. All the adults participating in the project will be able to access the services of a nutritionist during the program. The participant will be able to identify the various nutrition related infections they are encountering as well as get information on the symptoms of obesity. 4. All the adults will be able to learn the benefits of attending regular health checks to determine the conditions of their bodies in relation to the dietary habits. They will be able to come to terms with the adverse effects of obesity hence the need for regular checkups. 5. All the adults will be able to learn the various causes of obesity as well as identify the possible solutions including dietary and exercises. The adults will be able to identify various types of exercises which facilitate metabolism hence reduced chances of obesity. 6. All the adults will be able to change their daily programs which enhance obesity and adopt new ways of minimising the chances of obesity in the society. Generally, all the adults will be able to strictly adhere to the program provided in the project to reduce obesity rates in the society. 7. All the adults will be able to educate their children on healthy dietary habits by discouraging them on excessive consumption of processed meals which contains high levels of fats. Generally, all the adults will be able to control the dietary habits of the families by cooking healthy meals. 8. All the adults will be able to identify alternative medicines to those that facilitates obesity as well identify various approaches to eliminating and prevention of obesity among aged adults. Strategies Develop knowledge and personal skills of the adults involved in the obesity health promotion program. This involves development of advanced knowledge of the symptoms, effects and solutions of obesity. The personal skills will be developed among adults include: preparing balanced diet meals for the families and mechanisms of reducing fats in meals. Engage the local fresh products store and the health facilities on the health promotion project including the goals and objectives of the project to gain their support. The support ranges from examination of individuals as well provision of health dietary ingredients to the adults participating in the program. Engaging the adults participating in the programs in diverse types of physical activities with regard to their age as well as their health status. This strategy is geared towards encouraging the adults in participating in physical exercises which increases the rate of metabolism hence reduced cases of obesity. Develop appropriate resources to develop health promotion projects as well as its message. Establish a community garden whose purpose is to supply ingredients to the adults participating in the program Establishment of gymnasium to facilitate physical exercises among the individuals participating in the health promotion program. Work alongside higher education institutions and the employers to ensure that employees and students participating in the program are practice health dietary and physical exercises. Activities Healthy eating Print and distribute healthy recipes as well as demonstrate them to the adults participating in the program Conduct cooking classes to enable the participants to gain skills on methods of preparing meals with minimal fats. Develop posters indicating the effects of processed drinks as well as encourage consumption of water as the best alternative. Organise groups whose main responsibility is to demonstrate to the participants the adverse effects of obesity resulting from poor dietary to family and the individual. Organise film events to educate the adults on appropriate eating habits. This involves showing the adults films with the theme of poor dietary as the major cause of obesity. Demonstrating to the adults the effects of excessive fats in the body and how healthy eating can serve in reducing such effects. Physical exercising Involve the adults in activities geared towards looking for tradition sources of food such as fishing and fruit collection in the gardens. The participants get to exercises physically as they engage in such activities. Organise sporting events among participants such running, football, golf, lawn tennis and basketball. Involve the participants in dancing events which enables them to exercise physically in the process. Ensure that the adults participating in the program attend all the exercise events organised in the established gymnasium. This serves in increasing metabolism hence less fats are stored in the body. It is a very important aspect of any project especially with the Obesity Health Promotion project. Evaluation helps to give a sense of achievement of the project. It also helps to provide a mechanism for improvement the next time the project will be conducted. The evaluation process also helps a person to learn new things in relation to the project of interest. However, the evaluation process of the project needs to be done during the planning stage of the project. There are two methods that can be used to evaluate the Obesity Health Promotion project: qualitative method and quantitative evaluation method Linsley, Kane andOwen (2011). 1. Quantitative evaluation It is based on the numbers and things that can be measured in the project. It can also reflect on the number of the people who attended the project. It is a more structured way of evaluating a project. However, it always requires a base on where to start the project from. 2. Qualitative evaluation Qualitative evaluation focusses more on how well an activity was received and delivered. It relies more on the thoughts of the people as well as their opinion. It also explains how different people engaged with the project as well as their different activities. Qualitative evaluation also tries to explain what could have been done better in relation to the project. However, the type of evaluation greatly depends on the nature of the project. The first step to any evaluation is to gather the data of the project and record what exactly happened. After this stage, you move to the next stage of the objective of the project. Process, Impact and Evaluation of the Outcome of the Project  There are three methods of evaluating a health promotion project like this one. They include: -Process evaluation: It involves the process of assessing and measuring of the activities related to the project. It normally takes into account the views as well as the involvement of the people related to the project. Process evaluation normally tries to figure out whether the project is realistic with the target group of people or not. -Impact evaluation: It involves the process of measuring the immediate effects of the project to the members of the target group. It tries to analyse whether the objectives of the project had any impact to the target group of members or not. In the case of this project, it will try to evaluate whether the eating habits of the target group of people changed with the project or not. -Outcome evaluation: It involves the process of assessing the impact of the long term effects of the project Wylie and Holt (2010). This is generally in relation to the objectives of the experiment. Outcome evaluation focusses more on the end point result of the project. It also tries to assess whether the project had any impact on the target group of people. It also tries to explain how the objectives will have an impact to the target group of people in the long run. Generally, the evalution of the project is usually associated with the objectives of the project. It also tries to explain the behavioural change of the target group. For example, an increased number of the people going for medical check-ups would mean the project created a positive impact to the target group of people about their health. Normally, when people increase their knowledge about their health, their behaviour also changes for the better too.
