The national policy of England pays considerable attention to the health of its citizens. Yet, there is inequality when it comes to health facilities in the country, and addressing social determinants of health is vital to alleviate these disparities. Alcohol abuse is a national problem and one major reason is the inequality of health facilities in the country.
Over the last 10 years, England has been facing economic decline. Several factories and engineering businesses have been closed. A health needs assessment identified that there were high levels of alcohol abuse in this region. The people were facing many health problems due to this abuse. Working or running factories and engineering businesses requires good health. Employers demand that the workers meet certain health needs to get employment. As a public health practitioner, it is my job to do what I can to rectify the situation. This research will address several issues and will recommend how to overcome health inequalities. This paper provides an in-depth critical analysis that evaluates how community development and relevant theories can help bring together the local community. It is the help from the community that can persuade people to reduce the amount of alcohol consumption.
The health and well-being of the whole community are the stepping stones toward a healthy nation. A community effort is essential in rectifying health inequalities. To bring the community together, there will be several challenges. The essay will also suggest how to overcome these hurdles and make the process sustainable. The essay uses the example of England regarding economic decline due to alcohol abuse. By addressing the issue and recommending steps for improvement this essay can help reduce alcohol abuse anywhere in the world.
“The gross inequalities in health that we see within and between countries present a challenge to the world.” (Marmot, 2005, p. 1099) This challenge is tough but not impossible to rectify as figure 1 shows the key determinants of health.
