New York: John Wiley and Sons. 6 The Right Brain versus the Left Brain Introduction The traits of a left brain personality have come of major concern to many scientists and theorists, putting forward that those holding such traits tend to have certain particular attributes. Writers elaborate the characteristic behaviors of the left brainers in a collision of identities; investigative, rational and chronological. Left brainers bear these traits that distinguish them from right brainers. Additionally, those people who function with their left brain tend to have other outstanding characteristics, which make them have a keen eye for flawlessness. Left brainers are generally seen as having exceptional qualities most specifically in their tendency to do well in arithmetic functions, literary undertakings and general orderliness. Te left brain is described as having tremendous analytical and logical attributes of life. It is critical to its entire decision making, and bears an affinity for learning new skills. The main importance of the left side of the brain is its alignment towards critical thinking, while forming a strong foundation on the analytical and rational thinking (Gutman, 2007). The left side of the brain has a trait enabling it to have a trait for engaging in communicative skills. The function of understanding languages is assigned to the left side; therefore people who are left brainers have good communicative skills grasping different languages that come at their disposal. The Right Brain Theory The right side of the brain bears primarily different characteristics to those of the right side. Basically, right brainers are viewed as less intelligent compared to left thinkers, theorists attributing characteristic qualities of right brainers in terms of functionality. The functions of the right hemisphere of the brain show the advantages that right brainers get fond of. Psychologists attribute intuitive personality qualities to right brainers, meaning that they are more mechanical than verbal and therefore, demonstrate better response to demonstrated directions (Kosslyn &Rosenberg, 2001). The quality evident in this trait is that they do not possess critical thinking qualities. Furthermore, right brainers do not hold thought before they carry on an exercise. Aside from these characteristics, the right brain is well attributed with the communicative skill. The Tan and Wernicker experiments demonstrate the characteristic behavior of the right side of the brain to emulate the communicative and the linguistic traits of the right brain. The Reality of the Left Brain and Right Brain Theory The theories surrounding the right and the left brain hemispheres draw various arguments in the psychological school of thought, bearing a variety of adverse qualities that lead to the development that the theories are myths and have no basis of support. The arguments of debates rising from the differences of the right and the left brain later led to an investigation that revealed the truth of the aspects earlier disputed by many as untrue and biased. However, the concept of the personality approach regarding the difference of the left and the right brain faced further controversy, when the differences were proven far-reaching than the scope provided for. Several other aspects came up questioning the possibility of having two personality aspects in the same individual. Double personality is by far different from what the left and the right brain theory suggests, and therefore not an only property to consider when evaluating the cerebral components of an individual (Sugarman, 2007). Various other developments saw the awakening explaining the concept behind the differences between individuals. The conceptualization was that every individual possesses both personality attributes of the right and the left brain. Therefore, the only difference lies in the degree of inclination that each individual possesses, thereby creating the differences in personal attributes for every individual rated as dominance. Dominance The level of dominance of the side of the brain matters as to the personality of individuals and consequential activity o the brain. In different personalities, there is a different level of participation of each side of the brain. South California University psychologist Joseph Hellige analyses the effect of the fork or hat experiment that was introduced to measure the level of participation or alertness in the human brain. The mind was able to perceive the outcome of either a fork or a hat differently depending on the level of dominance that the individual bore in their minds. Dominance on the functioning of the brain relies on the control aspects of each side of the brain and what it perceives. Control The right side of the brain controls a distinct part of the human brain while the left holds a certain degree as well of the left. Different analysis draws different conclusions and the end to control and dominance of the brain become endless. The Art Institute of Vancouver points out that an individual is drawn more to the right control than to the left control mechanisms of the brain. However, conclusions drawn are evident that the left and the right brain are two different independent parts of the brain but are equally important in making conclusions for individuals. The right side bears the visual and overall observation chamber of the brain, where general random decisions made are based on the right brain side. Furthermore, the left part of the brain emulates a character of the communication aspect, and is drifted to making more involving decisions such that they are more technical analytical. However, the two hemispheres of the brain bear equal regard in the functioning of the brain as a whole. Split Brain Thinking Split brain thinking is a condition born from patients who have undergone epileptic encounters, despite them having undergone treatment from the severe cases of the condition. This is a condition characterized by a strong damage to the corpus callosum, which is the link between the two hemispheres of the brain. When the link is broken between the right and the left brain compartments, then the effect is the split brain thinking condition. Effects The effect of a split brain personality has been used to show the components of the different brain hemisphere capabilities. In a study of a person who suffered split brain thinking condition, conclusions showed that the man was beating his wife with the left hand while defending her with the right hand. It has been drawn that the right hand is driven independently by the left side of the brain and vice is also true. Importance of Two Hemispheres The importance in having both sides of the brain functional is because the individual is able to exercise comprehensive tasks. The effects of having both sides of the brain are that the rational components of the left brain and the mechanical attributes of the right brain. It is greatly important to have both aspects of the brain hemispheres as they complement the thinking of the individual as a whole. Conclusion The development of the research of the right and the left brain hemispheres draws recognition from the psychological point of view that attempts to explain the advantages and disadvantages of each hemisphere of the brain, while trying to submit to the audience the importance of having a connection between the two brain hemispheres.
