Web: http://www.pnas.org/content/110/14/5695.short.There are many sleep associated health effects go unrecognized every year due to the lack of monitoring. This paper focuses on the association of obesity with limited sleep. There is little known about how insufficient sleep influences balance and expenditure of energy from the body.

This study paper analyzed 16 adults in a 14 to 15 day long study as inpatients. The study quantified the results of not having sufficient sleep in a work week equivalent to five days, and its effects on energy food intake and expenditure. The results found out that due to insufficient sleep, the subjects increased their daily energy expenditure by 5%, while the energy intake was in excess after dinner in the evening, this is in excess of what the body requires to maintain a balance of energy.

Insufficient sleep, according to this research, led to a sufficient weight gain in spite of changes in satiety and hunger hormones which indicated high energy storage in the body. It was also observed that insufficient sleep led to delayed circadian melatonin phase and that women maintained weight if they had adequate sleep. However, inadequate sleep reduced dietary restriction which led to gaining weight in them. As a conclusion, the paper found out that increasing food intakes during inadequate sleep is an adaptation needed to provided energy so as to sustain the additional wakefulness, yet when food can be accessed easily, need is surpassed by intake.

A transition fro inadequate sleep to a sufficient one reduced energy intake of carbohydrates and fats and led to about 0.5kg weight loss.
