Identification of the subjectThere is a close correlation between pregnant mothers and infant deaths. The failure of maternal health usually leads to the death of infants (World Health Organization, 2013, p. 67). The death of the mother denies infant maternal care, which is essential in the growth and development of the child. Additionally, the mothers who fall sick during pregnancy are at risk of infecting their children. Therefore, pregnant mothers ought to be offered antenatal healthcare services for the welfare of both the mother and the child.

Context relevanceAustralian maternal care involves skilled birth professionals. Guenther and Vittori (2008, p. 79) claim that the engagement of skilled personnel in midwifery prevents newborn and mother deaths during delivery. The offered health care services also enhance access to nutritious food for the children, which helps the children gain natural immunity against a wide array of diseases (Palmer and Short, 2010, p. 36). The Australian medical authority also has programs, which enlighten mothers on better and hygienic practices of caring for children.

Reader engagement According to Lewis (2009, p.83), maternal healthcare services enable the children to receive early preventive healthcare against diseases like malaria, tetanus, polio, and pneumonia. Ideal healthcare services also guarantee exclusive breastfeeding, which affords the children with antibodies (Hally, 2008, p. 57). The antibodies are instrumental in the natural protection of the children from many infections. The healthcare for the mothers and children in Australia incorporates oral rehydration.

The rehydration is fundamental in preventing diarrhea infection.
