Dr. Tram’s loyalty to her country was noted in one of her excerpts in the diary dated July 1968 that stated “More than ever, I feel I am giving all my strength and skills to the revolution” (“Last night I dreamed of Peace” n. pag). She taught well among other medical practitioners, and she had more than the healing hands of a doctor since she was attached to her patients. Her attachment to the patients was proven through one of her excerpts in her diary “After over a month at the clinic, they have become like friends and family.

It’s wrenching to see them leave.” (“Last night I dreamed of Peace” n. pag.). My partner and I worked for one week in determining the basis for Dr. Tram’s logical decision of staying in the war. The logical decision of Dr. Tram was manifested through her actions in curing the wounded during the war. The decision to serve despite the unfavorable situation was Dr. Tram’s legacy. This was proven true in one of the Doctor’s entries in her diary dated April 08, 1968, which stated: Today, I did an appendectomy without enough medicine, just a few tubes of Novocain.

But the wounded young soldier never cried out or yelled. He just kept smiling, to encourage me. I felt so sorry for him because his stomach is infected. I would like to tell him, Patients like you, who I cannot cure, cause me the most sorrow. (Dang Thuy Tram n. page. qt. in Sullivan n.pag.) Another logical decision to stay in the war and loyalty to her fellowmen was staying in the final days of her life to look after a wounded shoulder when her companions have left and fled. This excerpt was written two days before her death on June 22,1970:Until today, no one has returned.

It has been almost 10 days since they left and promised to come back. Why haven't they returned? Is there a problem? We didn't think anyone would leave us like this. I am not a child. I am grown up and already strong in the face of hardships. But at this minute, why do I want so much a mother's hand to care for me? Or the hand of a close friend? Please come to me and hold my hand when I am so lonely. Love me and give me strength to travel the hard sections of the road ahead. (Dang Thuy Tram n. page. qt. in Sullivan n.pag.)The lesson we learned from the story is that success would not merely depend on what the work would bring, but rather on how the work would impact an individual’s life. Dr. Tram did not seem to have an ideal job as a physician that goes with the war, but it was her passion as a doctor that made a great impact on the way she chooses to live her life.
