Why i want to go into Psychiatry residency - Personal Statement Example

Full Into Psychiatry Family medicine has always been interesting to me however it has proven to be so broad for my interests that I considered focusing on a specialized field. Looking into psychiatry is my foremost option because I already had exposures to patients needing this kind of specialization. My mother was a psychiatric nurse at Creedmoor Children’s Psychiatric Center and influenced me a lot in this field, inspiring me to be a part of the school becoming a gym teacher for the mentally handicapped students.

I always wondered at the magnificent works of the mind, creating, analyzing and solving problems on top of other functions it could have and the amazement adds up when I see mentally handicapped people. What could have gone wrong in their nervous system is just one of the many questions I would love to study on, and many more related inquiries usually hit my mind that causes my insatiable inquisitiveness to just go on finding answers to my questions. However, one of my basic goals in life and in taking a career is helping other people as much as I could.

This inspires me to specialize on a field for me to be able to understand more intently the needs of patients and how I should deal with them to help them cope with the demands of life rather than just studying them. I always looked up to my mother as a psychiatric nurse because I believe it takes a lot of patience and strength to deal with mentally handicapped patients. My appreciation towards her grew even more when I dealt with them myself, when I served as their gym instructor. Dealing with the mentally handicapped is quite a challenge to one’s character but thinking they are also human beings makes an individual keep his sanity when attending to their needs.

As a gym instructor, the help I could extend has always been limited and the knowledge that I had was not sufficient for me to help them to the best that I can. This then posed a challenge to me to delve more on the study of psychiatry as it became one of my life’s goals to help the mentally handicapped in any means I can. This desire is driven by my medical interests which I know would be helpful to my understanding of patients, concentrating more on the mysteries of the mind and finding various means to deal with the challenge not only through medicines made available to patients but also through how people should deal with such circumstances.

I believe that specializing in psychiatry would give me the platform for a more extended help I could offer not only because of the knowledge I will gain in entering your program but more importantly the confidence of people facing such dilemmas in presenting their problems knowing they are dealing with the right person. In addition to my experience with the mentally handicapped, my interests and my medical education, I am confident I have the willingness to learn and serve with all the passion a psychiatrist should have.

I am counting on my diligence to help me pursue my goals, successfully finishing my studies and applying my education to help other people. The mental strength I have, have been tested through the years as I faced life’s challenges and I believe they can be contributory to my success in this career I am choosing. I know there are still a lot to learn, experience and discover so with this, I hope to see other things through your program.
