HEALTH PROMOTION PROGRAM Introduction Not every smoker has an extremely difficult time when quitting. Some persons smoke comparatively little, and doso principally to be sociable. Thus 10.2 million Americans quit smoking in a recent four-year period, according to one study. The majority of these were perhaps persons who did not find it particularly hard to quit. Typical of such smokers is the Harvard graduate who, after smoking moderately for several years, finally determined to give up this unclean habit. He simply threw away his cigarettes and never smoked again. It was relatively easy for him; he felt no real discomfort, and afterward little, if any, craving for a smoke. But other cases are admittedly very different. In view of all of this, why do people ever start smoking' Most of the recruits now come from among teenagers. They are special targets of tobacco advertising, in spite of company denials. These companies don't go after youth in so many words, but their approach is subtle and successful. As one cartoonist mimicked about their ads: "We tobacco companies don't want you kids to smoke unless you want to seem like adults." Their ads are packed with the favorite lures of youth: sports cars, hang gliders, surfers, cowboys, athletes, macho men and seductive women-all young and beautiful fun-people frolicking in the great outdoors. A more honest setting would be hospitals and funeral parlors-but that wouldn't sell cigarettes. To smoke, however, is to be with the in crowd-cool, grown-up, sophisticated. By smoking, teenagers feel independent, whereas in fact they are capitulating to peer pressure. They are also being manipulated by the tobacco companies. The companies know that their future is with the youth. If youths can be made addicts in their teens, they will likely be good customers for life. Federal law in the United States already bans cigarette advertising on television and radio, but last December the American Medical Association pushed to "extend the ban to all other tobacco products and all other media." Immediately, protesting cries rose up from the tobacco, advertising, and publishing industries. Their rights of free commercial speech under the First Amendment would be violated! Having failed to refute the health, youth, and addiction issues, some companies now create a new one: their civil rights and those of the smoker. Hence, as a result, it could be observed that if a program should be applied to a particular case of a smoker who wants to quit the matter, one must be able to create a primary program that shall address the root of the problem so as to be able to solve the situation in a more efficient approach that would be most applicable to the situation of the patient particularly assisted. THE REASONS OF SMOKING As first part of the program, an adviser [could be a psychologist] or the program proctor should first go through the case to be able to handle the situation. Through interview and counseling session a general analysis of the situation could be handled so as to be able to handle the need of knowing the basic roots of the situation. In this diagram, the possible reasons of smoking are presented in a rather clarified manner. Once, the reasons of a particular patient for smoking had been identified going through with the procedures that follow in the program therapy could then be pursued. THE PROGRAM Target Age: 13-18/19-27/28-37 Duration: 1st Part-4 Months 2nd Part-1 year Stage of Smoking Addiction: 3 months to 1 year Expectations: the clients who are noted to be within the span of addiction as noted above are expected to respond to the easy approach of the program thus allowing for more chance of motivating the patient to give up smoking. DESCRIPTION AND PARTICULARS Notes: To help more interested individuals who are willing to give up smoking, the program shall be offered free. The funding of the program shall be asked to be supported by independent groups who are willing to sponsor the process. Target Date Activity Duration Particular Descriptions First Month Psychological Assistance and Counseling One month/ alternating/ Twice a week The activity shall include several appointments with the proctor of the program so as to allow for some time for both parties to have knowledge between each other. Besides, during this phase of the activity, the record keeping of the important details about the case of the patient or the individual being treated with the therapy shall be handled. SECOND MONTH Physical Activities Program One Month/ Twice a week This would help the patient alleviate his or her health resistance allowing the chance to be busy and put possible reasons of smoking away from the mind of the individual THIRD MONTH Community Service and Dissemination Sessions One Month/ Twice a week The appointment of the individual to be lectured about his or her situation shall be followed by him or her assisting other people in the community to withdraw from smoking. This is expected to have an internal effect on the perception of the patient towards smoking based from the words and speeches or the educational presentations on smoking that he handles for others to know. This shall also make him or her feel more involved in the process. FOURTH MONTH Medication and Family Involvement One Month/ thrice a week The medication of course would involve the use of patches as needed and the nicotine gum as prescribed depending on the severity of the smoking case of the patient. Besides this, the support of the family on the process of regaining the health of the smoker shall also be involved. It could be noted that through this, the patient would continuously be given the right kind of assistance with or without the supervision of the adviser that would bring about the Coming of the process of the next year appointment for the individual's constant observance on his capability to remain in the program until he completely withdraws from the vice. What needs to be remembered for the Next Year of Staggered Appointments of Counseling on the Part of the Proctor' Psychology, as a branch in studying human behavior and intellect has been naturally involved in several processes of handling individual problems on their dispositions in life. Therapies have been developed to support the need of the people who are under the effect of depression and stress that are brought about by the changing lifestyle in the society. Through the different developmental processes that have been taken by psychologists to support the growing need for psychological therapeutic treatments for victims of depression, it could be observed how counseling too has become more complicated yet more effective for the patients that the said practice in psychology targets. Along with the therapies and counseling sessions comes the supervision models that are designed to evaluate an individuals' situation and the impact that the counseling sessions have on him and his situation are applied at the same time. Through these evaluations, it could be expected that counseling processes would be more effective. Bloom added in his study the five major processes of supervision that should be applied in the activity of the supervisors towards the supervisees: Comprehension This pertains to the ability of the counselors to identify and interpret written data into a more useful information that would support the solution to the case being dealt with. Graphs and charts as well as other picture based materials should be dealt with seriously by the supervisors and the counselors as well as the accuracy of the information that is to be presented lies on the correct interpretation of the graphical presentations. Application Once the informations and the graphical presentations are read and understood or interpreted, the utilization of the information gathered is the next step. Once the information is decoded into a more useful information for the sake of the case's solution, the application of the collected data comes in. This is where the assimilation of the concepts, the methods and the theories to be applied in dealing with the situation being solved comes into the picture. Analysis The methods and the concepts as well as the utilization of the gathered information has already been performed. The activity that follows then is the analysis of the outcome. Once the situation is related, the supposed prepared solutions are applied; the analysis of the result of the solution shall be performed. This is where the supervisors evaluate the relation of the informations with the applied solutions. Through this analytical evaluation, supervisors would know on where the counselors should be further observed or better yet, trained. Synthesis The integration of all the processes into one certain process that would be usable for other cases is the meaning of synthesis. Once everything has been settled down to a more usable information, the emphasis on the impact of the process within the application of the solution to a certain problem is then evaluated further. Evaluation This is concerned on the judgment of whether the material is useful or not for the case that is being handled in a certain counseling appointment. Hence, through this, the supervisors would have a greater view on how effective the counselors' process of dealing with the case is. These five major processes or patterns of supervising leads to a conclusion that the focus of the supervising models is to ensure that the counselors are able to perform their duty towards the best possible way of interacting with their clients in counseling sessions. Supervising models in counseling processes have a great contribution in creating a more progressive counseling process especially of the part of clinical psychology. Simply applying therapies without following a certain pattern may result to a less-effective solution for the client's situation. The involvement of the supervisors in the situation makes the load of the counselors much easier to bear. The assistance that they receive from their head subordinates certainly allows them to examine their capabilities, their limitations and the large room of improvement that they have to take. Conclusion and Summaries As noted through the program suggested herein, withdrawing from smoking may not be easy but it sure is not that impossible to bear. It could be considered that through the right motivational process, gaining the right acceptance from the client to go through the program could be expected. Through this diagram, the different reasons for quitting could be disseminated to the client thus giving him or her the right overview that is needed to be understood for one to willingly subject to the procedures of the program suggested in this report.
