The Family Cultures That Uniquely Defines My Family - Essay Example

Some cultures become ingrained into a family system and continue to influence their behavior regardless of their knowledge (Zahra et al., 2008). Therefore, family culture is a belief in something deeper or an innate value that uniquely defines the family. This paper sheds more light on some of the family cultures that uniquely defines my family. Part of the family cultures includes traditions that are passed from one generation to another (Culture of family, N.d). In my family, the entire extended family lived together in one place.

We, therefore, build daily routines to be observed by all members under the leadership of one person. In my family, my father was supposed to be the head of the family but actually, my great grandmother was the matriarch of the family. Although my parents made many of the decisions, my great grandmother’s input was important. Most of her work involves helping to rear her grandchildren and she has earned her respect from all members of the family who holds her in high regard. In addition, the grandmother gets herself busy to make the entire family gather every six months because most families moved to different directions.

Like in many traditional homes, most of the roles in the family are defined on gender. For instance, my father did most of the hard labor work that required a lot of effort. He would build, lift heavy luggage, dig the garden, and perform most of the manual jobs. On the other hand, my mother kept herself busy with household work including child-rearing, cooking, washing, and other household chores. However, she did not do all this alone because food for the entire family was cooked together, which called for other women in the family to help.

My great grandmother came in to assist cook some traditional foods that other women could not cook. For instance, every six-month gathering calls for a goat eating.
