Healthcare Reforms in the United States - Essay Example

The implementation of PPACA has a significant impact not only to the American citizens but also the private sectors, government bodies, organizations and institutions. By making it compulsory for each individual to be covered by healthcare insurance, the average-income families without employer-sponsored healthcare plan will have to pay for their own healthcare insurance out of their own pocket. On the other hand, the low-income families will have the opportunity to receive subsidies from the federal government.

This particular policy could narrow down the healthcare gap between the rich and the poor. However, it is also unfair on the part of the average income earners because a large part of the money they pay for their taxes will be used as a financial subsidy for the poor.  On the part of the private business organizations and institutions, the actual cost of hiring employees would increase because of employer-sponsored healthcare plan (Galewitz, 2010). In case the government will have to subsidise the healthcare plan of an employee, companies that are currently employing more than 50 people are obliged to pay their shared responsibility to the government.

On the contrary, small-scale business organizations will receive subsidies from the government in case they buy their employees’ healthcare insurances through an exchange (IRS, 2012). Again, this particular healthcare reform can benefit the small-scale companies at the expense of the medium- and large-scale companies. Therefore, a lot of medium- and large-scale companies in the United States joined their forces to convince the Republican House of Representatives to pass the bill called “Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act” (Cantor, 2011).

Because of the sudden increase in the number of insured individuals, the number of people who may regularly seek health care services would eventually increase. As a result, the sudden increase in the inflows of patients would make it more difficult on the part of the healthcare professionals to attend to their healthcare needs without sacrificing the quality of healthcare services given to each insured individuals. Furthermore, the fact that the PPACA offers federal subsidies to the low-income individuals and families could only result to a significant increase in the U.S. annual healthcare expenditures (Department of Health & Human Services and CMS, 2009).

Therefore, at the end of the day, the only groups that can benefit from this particular healthcare policy are the healthcare
