The various stages of behavior change according to this model are crucial in helping dental practitioners understand the steps to take during initiation of health behaviors aimed at reducing the risk of the periodontal disease in the community or identified individuals.

Successful initiation and implementation of health behaviors to check against periodontal disease development requires adherence to the model’s stages including the last stage which is the sustainability of the recommended behaviors (Martin, Haskard-Zolnierek & DiMatteo, 2010).
