Performance in every activity is vital for its success. This is achieved if the right talent is identified and natured appropriately. Talent identification requires considering several aspects of the individual. This will help determine if the talent they possess can be trained or it is natural. Natural talent can be identified easily since an individual uses it with ease and perfectly. Trained talent is one that requires practice at every moment for an individual to perfect and it requires great determination on the side of an individual and trainer. Several talent identification programs and data bases have been developed to help individuals identify what they are best at (Bobbert & Knoek van Soest, 2001). Talent development After identifying a talent there is need to develop it. It involves providing of adequate infrastructure that can enable an individual realize full potential. Talent identification strategies Psychological capabilities of an individual are examined in talent identification. This includes body structure of individuals, muscles formation, aggressiveness, ability to respond and adapt to environment and natural characteristics that are in line with the sports requirements. Focus of the strategy is to examine height, age and weight (Williams & Franks, 1998). Organizing of sports events in the area of identification is also used. This is used to discriminate individuals by placing them in positions that they can perform best. It helps in identifying traits in individuals which can be trained and natured so that the individual realizes the full potential. This strategy is essential because it enables department to determine the best performers in the elite group selected. Different attributes possessed by individuals are assessed by those of others to determine how best one is and if the attributes possessed can be trained for improvement (Muller, 2000). Determining extent of maturity of an individual in handling different situations and pressure is undertaken in talent identification. This strategy of talent identification is referred as talent development consideration. Individual is placed in conditions that require application of knowledge to solve the problem. Talent development strategies Practice makes perfect and therefore development is essential for all talents. Elite sport uses various strategies in talent development. They are to be provided with all facilities possible for physical training. They are to be supported psychologically and motivated as they expect through satisfaction of their needs. When elite athletes mature mentally they will be able to conduct their responsibilities effectively (Weiss & Chaumeton, 1992). The selected elite group is to be introduction to sports science education to refine their talents. Training is to be given on sports nutrition, sports medicine, psychology and physiology which will keep the athletes updated on their health and activities (Williams & Reilly, 2000). Talented athletes to be exposed to competition to gain experience and perfect their skills in the area they are best at. The quality and quantity of competition is to be increased and accessed at all times by elite athletes so that they reach their potential. Regular access to a high level of quality competition will ensure that they improve their skills in the field they are in (Coakley, 1990). Talented athletes will also have access to facilities which are suitable enough to develop their skills appropriately and as required. It will help them conduct training in facilities that they are expected to use. Exposure and familiarity with facilities is important for the athletes since they will be expected to use them every moment (Bompa, 1985). Another strategy that will be used in talent development is providing an athlete with career and education. Providing of advice and services will enable an athlete cop up with the change of realities of life that they are currently in. the additional education will help him develop good relationships with people around him and within the mainstream of high performance programs (Gabbett & Domrow, 2007). Conclusion As discussed above talent identification and development in sports is vital for success of that sport. Therefore best strategies should be put in place to ensure that the best are selected and trained. References Bloomfield, J., Ackland, T.R. & Elliott, B.C (1994).
