Prostitution Prostitution is one among the oldest professions of the human society, peculiarities of which change drastically according to the epoch and area of exploration. Sometimes it has been bound with culture, legalized and thus a woman (or a man) could have reached wealth and fame by means of prostitution. In other cases the situation was opposite, and people accused in fornication were to be prosecuted and punished. The situation hasn’t changed nowadays, as the “oldest profession” boasts with the same distinctions. Who has a profit from prostitution: The tradition’s remaining stable for hundreds of years means it’s being if not adequate to common law, then, at least, demanded by certain part of world’s human population. Geishas, hetaeras, and nowadays escort boys and girls remain true to their profession. Reasons for different people are various: at first, there is a certain type of power and connections a prostitute may receive while “communicating” with people; according to words of madam - girls in sex industry are correlated to success, treated very well and receive a generous compensation for their time. Clients could have remained friends with some of them and would send them money for bills or education. So-called girls could make over $10,000 per week for a couple of nights (Davis). “The most Ive ever made is £30,000 in a month” - tells a host, Josh Brandon, from London. The other reason is a decent payment and acceptable schedule, of which not so many other works can boast, "Working in a bar was just no good - too much work and not enough money," - Tommy says (Magazine). Also, it is clear, that legal prostitutes take their job seriously and cautiously in both financial and health issues. It is stated, that prostitutes are often more aware of safe sex than average people, and their work is scheduled, has a rate and is bound with solving legal financial and social issues - as any other job. Government also can receive profit from prostitution, under the condition it’s being legal. “Germany legalized prostitution in 2002, creating an industry now thought to be worth 16bn euros a year” (Reed). Although prostitution is illegal everywhere in America except Nevada, old figures put its value at $14 billion annually nationwide; surely an underestimate. More recent calculations in Britain, where prostitution is legal but pimping and brothels are not, suggest that including it would boost GDP figures by at least £5.3 billion ($8.9 billion) ("A personal choice"). Actual profit is received not only in financial, but also in social aspect of human life. “When Rhode Island unintentionally decriminalized indoor prostitution between 2003 and 2009 the state saw a steep decline in reported rapes and cases of gonorrhea” ("A personal choice"). Some people consider payed sex a social service, needed by certain people. For example, by sex addicts, to whom sex becomes practically as needed as food and sleep, and thus prostitution can become a resort without causing troublesome or illegal situation. Who has difficulties with it: Still, society, government and even international politics also experience a plenty of troubles and losses bound with prostitution. For example, this issue divides society into two ideological groups, and each of them votes for and demands their own set of laws, that sometimes contradict the meaning of the other half. Thus such social behavior encourages government to seek for compromises, that are not always useful, or, in the majority of cases, seem unacceptable by both groups, creating meetings, more or less radical movements that counteract each other while disturbing common p[people and interfering society. Also, for many people it is forbidden under religious, moral aspects or just unacceptable to take prostitution as a part of social life. But they will be ought to observe prostitution advertisements - as it’s being legalized makes it quite popular, explain their children about an issue or even fear that their neighbor, relative or kid can become legal escort - as it would be acceptable and normal. Moreover, a law taken in one country, influences laws, that should be taken in neighbor countries. Thus the example of Germany in opening brothels caused French politics to make laws stricter for not to allow the situation of sex tourism in France. The issue ended up with opening a brothel, by Germans, near the French border, that, under such strict French law, should have been more than successful (Reed). In common there are four models of prostitution legalization, no one of which has proven itself adequately successful. Protecting prostitution at one side makes the statistics of rape-causes and venereal diseases being lower, but, on the other, it encourages sex-tourism and people trading it as there is a profit in doing it. From the other side prostitution restricting ends up causing existence of uncontrolled black market that sells people, total defenselessness of prostitutes under the face of law and intolerable work conditions. Even people, who have nothing to do with it, can suffer, as prostitution’s being profitable encourages human trafficking, that is sometimes closely bound to drug-dealing thereby influencing even it. Unexpectedly, the evolution of society can be harmed itself, as people, searching for easy way of earning money, would prefer selling their physical skill rather than their mind and ideas. It doesn’t’ count people who work as prostitutes as it is a way to afford studying, but still there is a plenty of teenagers, that do not seek for hard ways. And thus the amount of working power and specialists can decrease. Who sells what: The issue of “selling body is also dubious, as it is a term, more often used by people who do not use prostitution itself - as a customer or as a seller. Prostitutes and hosts are more used to tell that they send their skills, in a variety of aspects, as being healthy, cautious, well-conditioned, and behaving appropriately. They tend to search their customers attentively, check their state of health and probable mental health. They cooperate in order to secure their safety, book their incomes, rent or buy area to secure business - everything is made the same way as any other well-paid job would ask, with attention and control. The work itself is bound with some aspects, as forced privacy (some people are not able to tell relatives about their work), or choosing clients (like sleeping with old guys, homosexual intercourse, intercourse as it is). Some aspects among above listed demand special state of nervous system and world view, that makes this job peculiar and unacceptable for a plenty of people. Still, there is a point of view, that the item of selling is exactly a human body - that raises a plenty of arguments according to human rights, slavery, dignity protection, religious motives, moral. What is happening: This way a prostitute sells skills, customer buys sex, average person sees it as human trading. Still, there is a point, that the way pop-industry nowadays earns it’s money is not far from prostitution in ways of selling skills and making “seemingly easy money” ("Prostitution: Is there anything wrong with selling sex?"). The majority of people who are against it are the people, who don’t have anything to do with prostitution in both means of not buying and not selling - and don’t want to be interfered or anyhow bound to it, even by the means of informational accessibility. The minority of people who are against it are the people, who were victims of forced prostitution or the people whose relatives might have become prostitutes. There are also people who are ought to make prostitution in order to secure proper financial state for existence. The majority of people among the ones who support prostitution are the ones who are already in the industry and have a positive experience of earning money this way. Do you think this can change, how and what can you suggest: Changing state of things seems vague for the reason that there is no particular goal stated, moreover, there is no trouble defined. A part of world’s society considers prostitution itself a trouble worth fighting with, while the other part is seemingly contented with the fact of its existence; the whole lawful human society is deeply concerned with a trouble of human trafficking - that becomes a main argument for prostitution prohibition - but it’s volume and demand only increase. Moral-defenders vote for protection of human rights, but prohibit the right of less moral people to have sex freely and as a part of financial issues. The argument’s point is even not stated nowadays for it to be solved. Still. As for me, It is good for each state to have and test Its own model of payed sex behavior – as a part of multinational experience. Still, it is necessary to provide legal protection of people, in order to overcome issue of prostitution among poor, kidnapping, child abuse – and everything, that a dark side of prostitution is bound with. And, at the same time, an intellectual space of people, who don’t want to see prostitution as a part of their private life and leisure – should be secured. Researching this I, once again, have understood, that there is a variety of ways of life, and each human should choose his own, according to his own beliefs, and not under influence of people who surround him. Still, this choice should not be forced with a need to survive under poverty or compulsion. Thus at least half of contradicting issues would be solved, and the other part is based in world view differences, that should be solved by means of partial differentiation of informational space. Such state of things was already known by me, and, thus, was admitted once again as the existing one. Still, the variety of manifestations of human opinion according to prostitution was new to me and really impressive. Works cited Amaya, Barbara.
