Green buildings - Assignment Example

Schindler, S. tried to explain and assess the privately promulgated Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. He arguesthat interpretation of LEED standards causes a couple of problems – both theoretically and practically. It is argued that though cities are taking actions and considering environmental problem seriously, but the problem is that once they have adopted a LEED-based private green building ordinance, it is believed that all possible concerns have been addressed, which is not true rather cities need to modify those ordinances.

Further small cities which lack technical expertise have trouble in developing their own green building ordinances. Therefore, because of unavailability of manpower or technical expertise, it is prudent to all localities to follow the basic structure e.g. the LEED checklist. Local governments are also responsible to involve economists and modelers to ensure effectiveness of existing standards and achieve the desired goals which should be in line with cost-benefit analyses. Last but not least cities must consider the choice between the two types of buildings whilst ensuring that their green building ordinances could come-up with the desired changes in the environment.
