Apple was co-founded by its current leader Steve Jobs in 1976. Apple revolutionised the personal computing industry by creating personal computers for everyday users. Apple has therefore mainly been a computer company producing both hardware, known as Macintosh computers, and operating system software, known as the Mac OS based on a graphical user interface. It did create a mobile device in the 1990s, the Apple Newton, which was a PDA, but it did not prove successful.Apple’s renewed foray into the mobile telecommunications industry began with the iPhone, which was developed in response to the need for a convergence device.
It was first released in June 2007. The iPhone began a new age of smartphones with touchscreens, web browsing facilities, combined music players and which allow a multitude of third-party applications (Kobie, 2009). Apple spent millions of dollars in research and development to make the iPhone perfect including antenna testing, radiation tests and network simulations.At present, therefore, Apple produces three major kinds of products: (1) personal computers, (2) portable digital music and video players, and (3) mobile communication devices.
Its Mac OS X and iOS operating systems are also key software products that are central to all its products. These are in addition to various other related products, applications, accessories, services, etc.Apple is best known for a number of key features of its product and services (asiaing.com, 2010):• Ease of use; providing ‘out-of-the-box experience• Innovative industrial design• Seamless integration with its other products and servicesThe company also engages heavily in research and development.
The company’s products are popular among creative professionals, and Apple also promotes its technologies in the education and government sectors among others.NokiaNokia began as a paper mill by the banks of the Nokianvirta River in Finland in 1865. The venture into mobile telecommunications began in 1968, and since 1992, it focused exclusively on telecommunications. This was a strategic decision made by its then CEO, Jorma Ollila.
