Further, this book has powerful tools to help one take initiative and start with own definition of a successful career. As per the book, a career does not completely mean having a source of bread and butter, but to earn pride, satisfaction and currency to bring in new to regular life. The book isn’t focused towards a countable set of people, but for all job-holders and jobless who want to have a ‘career’ and not just a ‘job’. Great Work, Great Career is a spectacular mix of philosophical confidence-booster through the suggestions and practical guide through the presentation and conversation tools presented in it.
It consists of a systematic and symmetrical partition of different aspects of approaching towards the desired job, which is well-knit to give a clear picture to the reader about what is required in broad sense. Through this book, Covey and Colosimo have given a message to their readers that contribution to their work with passion and loyalty is a highly important characteristics. Authors have written about identifying career needs, solving big problems, contributing towards the work through the passion, strengths and interest.
New phrases like ‘creating emotional bank accounts’, ‘building own village’, ‘circle of influence and concern’ and a few more to list down have been introduced by Covey and Colosimo in the book that are elaborated very well in the book and bring quite accurate help to the readers in the professional lives. What key points are to be taken care of while preparing for the above areas are not mentioned well. I found having a different resume and cover letter to be quite generic. It can bring a job to jobless and a promotion to one with a job, but it does not tune with what Covey and Colosimo call as ‘Great Career’. A lot of phrases written in the book are quite standard and at time exaggerated. In the book, it is stated by the authors “define your unique strengths and the exact market need you can fulfill”, which if commonly followed by all the readers is not going to bring any advantage to most of them.
Rather than this, the authors could have talked about creating USP (unique selling proposition) which would have been precisely beneficial. Another point to contradict in the book is that while reading it, there might be stances where the readers would jump into taking exercises, making notes that are beneficial for them, and might be ignited to start with defining their ‘
