?Armin Ak Swindle Eng 122 02/07/11 Different Worlds in Family and Outside My native language is Farsi and my family enjoys speaking it a great deal. English language is widely used but it has been heavily influenced by the Farsi language such that its words and phrases have different meanings from the conventional ones. I spent 11 years of my childhood in Iran and life offered me both its good and bad sides. I was a well behaved child but at times I was a problem to many people including my teachers and fellow students in school. My parents from time to time taught me good habits especially respect for people regardless of ethnicity or race. They taught me the values of working hard and reaping where I sow and dedication to everything I set myself to do. Throughout my life I have had many friends basically because of my good public relations skills. I have since left Iran and currently living in the United States where life seems quite different and to be successful one need to be more serious and focused. Technology, infrastructure, health services and many other areas are more superior to those back in Iran. I was however not that badly off in respect to technology together with my brother and this has helped me to cope well with the new life. My brother and I have had numerous conflicts with our parents based on the decisions they make or we make concerning our lives. They are obviously from a different generation that does not understand the world has changed to a more liberal society. All the same, disrespect to one’s parents is a taboo as dictated by our culture. Dialogue and subordination always save the day as their opinions always come first. The other aspect of our culture is the high regard for patriarchy social system. This system tends to accord the male figure more respect than the female. Research has shown that such systems breed youngsters who have little or no respect to authority or social order. Democratic mannerisms are unheard of and this trend has spread to governance systems such that our nation is held hostage by similar ideologies. I am happy here in America as things are done in a more open and democratic manner. There are also many people from Iran and other countries of the world who are here as immigrants (Gabaccia and Leach 68). I have no reason to hold on to my cultural orientations in this new land as other immigrants seem to have fully integrated with the American way of life. I have a goal of ensuring that my life in the United States will translate to a good life for the rest of my family members wherever they are. Am thankful to my family for raising me to be the person I am today. They taught me how to speak, walk and above all, how to be a good human being. I learnt how to cooperate with others while doing family duties and this made family life quite exciting. I also learnt how to love and dedicate myself to family matters, communicate well and respect all especially older people. Our society does not allow women to contribute towards family bills as a sign of respect to them. I was taught to help those how are in need. I am also thankful to my American high school classmates who helped me to learn English since it was a new and difficult language for me. They made it interesting to learn the new culture and behaviors. I was fascinated by the American sports e.g. American football, baseball and hockey which were all new to me. My place of work is the other that has given me a platform to communicate with consumers, follow rules and regulations, learnt some laws that apply in the workplace especially regarding benefits and how to communicate officially to people e.g. the manager. The workplace has also offered me a chance to learn how to operate online shopping and selling commodities. Education in the US is of high quality and competitive in case one does their best to get good grades. I will take advantage of the open channels of communication and the advanced technology to upgrade my skills and excel in my studies and other realms of my life now and in future. I am eying top universities in the world and wish to pursue sciences meaning that I need to work very hard in all that I am doing to achieve this goal. United States has world class universities and I believe I will enroll into one of them so as to pursue this dream. I am mostly interested in scientific research and this country will offer me the platform to utilize my potential to the maximum for the benefit of mankind. I will update myself with the current trends in technology and scientific innovations as a sure way of nearing my goal to be a renowned researcher from a world class university here in the United States. It is my wish to see my innovations turn to uplift people’s lives all over the world especially in the developing nations where poverty, disease and bad governance are unending plagues. In America I would say that life has not been easy but I have coped so far by trying to make friends who have offered good advice on things that matter like education. Many have so far assisted me a great deal on how to conduct myself here and introduced me to the dynamics of life in this part of the world. In general, life in the United States has taught me a great deal and much more is in the offing.
