(Hansen’s Disease) Overview Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is a contagious disease that affects the skin, mucous membranes, and nerves, causing discoloration and lumps on the skin (Gould, 2005). In more severe cases, a person’s body can experience disfigurement and deformities. Contrary to popular belief, leprosy does not cause body parts to detach themselves from the body; however, the infection can cause the limbs to become numb or diseased, giving the sensation of having fallen off.
