Project Blurb [max 50 words]
The project designs environmental sustainable interior of residential houses. The project creates a road map for attaining value added of natural resources in Australia’s economy and sustainable environment goals. The project will redefine sustainability by focusing on the practice of reusability of environment and fair trade products for interior designs.
Project Description [max 400 words]
The project has been designed to provide an understanding of environmental sustainability of modern interior designs of houses in Australia. Specifically, the design has been undertaken to redefine sustainability within the context of Australia to meet social, economic and environmental aspects of life. It therefore means that the aim of the project is to focus on the practice of reusability of environment aspects such as graywater and rainwater. Working in liaison with Australia’s department of sustainability, environment, water, population and communities the project provides structured approach that dictates what constitute sustainable construction of residential building. While the challenge of environment sustainability remains a concern in most parts of the country, the design project will be contextualised to fit specific needs of the Aboriginals. Within the environmental context and cultural characteristics of the Aboriginals, the design of the interior house is developed to be constructible. To meet the geographical and historical context of the people, the interior design will use common and accessible materials and creation of a repetitive design that conform to Green Building Councils and their policies that guide designing of healthier and energy-efficient and environmentally responsible designs.
For instance, the New South Wales Environmental Protection Authority has their policy frameworks for sustainable environment and this is the same case with agencies such as Australian Environment Agency and Department of the Environment and Energy. The design project woks within the frameworks of these agencies as it designs a project that employ modern technologies and practices in interior design so as to meet the minimum certifications by these agencies for green or sustainable design while at the same time meeting criteria that have been set by Australian Environment Agency. As a result of a growing demand for energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable interior designs in Australia and specifically among the Aboriginals, material selection will give consideration to impact on sustainable outcome of the entire project’s interior design so that it can conform to requirements of different agencies.
Australian Environment Agency will be responsible in enforcing the project to ensure that there is improvement to both air conditioning and energy efficiency units and the insulation adopted in the process of designing of the building to comply with modern standards in water, air and pollution standards that are measured against international standards such as United States Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) system of certification.
Project Aims [max 300 words]
The project key priority is to develop interior design that checks on energy efficiency, water efficiency, material selection and indoor environmental quality so that the resultant project emulate modern projects in Australia such as 60L Green Building in Melbourne, Victoria and the Green Skills Centre of Excellence Training Centre that have been designed to meet LEED specifications by adopting local building materials that reduce consumption of energy, cooling systems that reduces expenditure on air conditioning and automatic lighting that switches off when a room is not occupied.
The design project therefore picks on such projects to design interior of a residential building by considering knowledge about sustainable materials. By extension, the design is intended to consider environmental sustainability issues such as health of the residents and as such factors such as susceptibility to microbiological growth, volatile organic compound (VOC) and long-term environmental impact will be given consideration while choosing materials for the interior design.
Generally, management of cost will be undertaken by the guidelines from Australian Environment Agency and the accounting department of the project sponsors will be in charge of approving costs and changes to the project costs. Quality assurance department from Australian Environment Agency will be in charge of cost performance especially when it comes to quantitative measurement of project progress. In addition, Cost and Schedule Performance Index will borrow structured provided by LEED so that Australian Environment Agency and the project sponsors can report the project cost index on a weekly or monthly basis. Quarterly update of Australia's National Greenhouse Gas Inventory released in mid-2016 has indicated that Australia’s annual emissions have gone up by 8 percent in the last 12 months. The implication of this status is the need to reduce the current statistics with regard to sustainable environment.
Community Engaged [max 200 words]
First, this project recognizes that community participation promotes the aspect of shared responsibility especially when there is engagement of youth, community members and stakeholders. To begin with, the project will start by initiating a 3-day skills building and application of relevant skills that help in the actualization of the design processes, especially the framework of designing and implementing interior designs for the locals. In such process the families and stakeholders will be engaged in pilot study so that they understand environmental practices that best responds to the community needs. Secondly, the community will be involved in the design processes and collection of design materials so that they understand the meaning and scope of capacity building for communities and how project success and sustainability creates the aspect of environmental sustainability. Thirdly, the process of project implementation will mobilise community participation with regard to assessing the scope of management plan specifically on the work progress, delays, unnecessary work, cost overruns, failure to attain deliverables and other unintended consequences. For instance, it will be the responsibility of the community to accept the final project deliverables and acceptance of the scope of the project on a monthly basis.
Publically Available [max 200 words]
Describe who is the audience for this project and how the project will be available to them? In what ways will you address accessibility? (Criteria c.)
Memorable Experience [max 200 words]
Demonstrate how you have considered the experience of the viewer and what impact it will have. How will it affect them? (Criteria d.)
