The survival of future generations could be assured by making thought decisions by the key players in the political arena. This work is concerned with dryland systems in connection with climate change. Narran Wetlands in Australia are made up of a number of swamps and ephemeral lakes. The swamps and lakes obtain water from the Narran River and this wetland is to be found in the state of New South Wales (Thoms 2002, p.41). The wetland covers an area of approximately 224 square kilometers. The complex results from a floodplain which is found between Walgett and Brewarina towns in Australia.

The floodplain happens to have a number of open water areas amongst them the Narran Lake. The lake is connected by a lot of vegetation. In addition, the area is subject to a lot of flooding. The vegetation around Lake Narran provides fertile ground for the breeding of waterbirds and whose survival is dependent upon flooding. Birdlife International identified the wetlands for their important role in the breeding of birds. The area is home to a large number of Australian Pelicans. It also provides habitat to Australian Bitterns which is an endangered species of birds (Cossart 2008, p.17). The wetland faces threat since the utilization of water upstream for the purposes of agriculture results in less flooding being experienced.

However, it is important to note that Ramsar Conventions list the wetland as having international importance. Additionally, a sizable portion of the wetland forms part of the Narran Lake Nature Reserve. It is clear that the wetlands need to be conserved owing to the consequences that would result from the wetlands being completely destroyed (Grindrod, Moss, Kaars 1999, p.465). A dangerous precedent has already been set by having a series of destructive economic activities that reduce the inflow of water into the flood plains.

Conservation should entail a balance between the benefits which should accrue to the current and future generations.
