7th April CONSERVATION VS DEVELOPMENT Central Falls is the smallest town in Providence County, Rhodes Island, United States of America. The 2010 Census report indicates that the town has a population of 19, 376. Central Falls has an area with less than 2sqyare miles, making it the minutest metropolitan, in the smallest state the 25th heavily populated incorporated place in the United States. It also falls under the list of the only four incorporated places in New England whose population density is higher than the city of Boston. The other three are Somerville, Cambridge and Chelsea where it comes after the first two and ahead of Chelsea. Central Falls is named after a waterfall on the Blackstone River that turns out as a recreational centre. In May 2010, Central Falls due to cases of bankruptcy went into receivership and was proposed for a municipal merger. It has a significant history of accommodating the major battle of King Phillip’s war. Initially, it was one of the many villages within the town of Smithfield, but later split into three other smaller towns which are Smithfield, North Smithfield and Lincoln due to the quick but steady economic growth. It later extended and became part of Lincoln where the host experienced its own growth spurt and in 1895, it split into two towns which gave birth to the City of Central Falls. Sooner or later, Central Falls started experiencing an influx in the number of European settlers and others from Ireland, Scotland and French Canada. By the 20th century, the town had experienced its own population explosion and for a record in the US, it was the city with the highest number of people per square kilometer and this is still the case up to date. Central Falls has always been an extremely diverse city, so much such when there are celebrations of any kind like anniversary, people from all over the world attend the annual event as an indication of their representation in the city. TOPOGRAPHY Central Falls is located in Randolph County at 41°53′24″N 71°23′33″W (41.889863, -71.392606) and has a huge distribution of natural features such as rivers, hills and mountains. It is the nearest place in the USGS place names database to the center of the map shown in Figure 1.0. There is the Fall River which is 13KM north of the town. Other places that harbor these natural features and are close to Central falls include East Providence, Warwick, Cranston and Pawtucket. For people who love fun and entertainment outdoors, Central Falls is the finest place you can be, because those who like to go hiking, mountain climbing or surfing, there are a number of joints where you can hang out. For the closest tide, there is Warren’s Narragansett Bay. For the second closest tide times, there is Bristol Highlands also in Narragansett Bay. For the third, fourth and fifth, the perfect joints are Swansea, Bristol Harbor (Narragansett Bay) and Bristol respectively. Ski resorts available in Central Falls are categorically highlighted depending on the distance from the town and are mentioned from the most closest to the least close ski resorts. They include Yawgoo Valley, Blue Hills, Ski Ward Ski Area, Nashoba Valley and Wachusett Mountain Ski Area in that order. Also, mountains close to the town include Jerimoth Hill, Great Blue Hill, Nobscot Hill, Mount Pisgah, Waitt-s Mountain in the order of the closest to the least close in terms of distance variation. Surf beaches available in the town include Sachuest Beach, 2nd beach, Cutty Wow Reef, Eastons Beach (1st Beach) and Goosewing Beach arranged from the order of the most closest to the least. In case of disasters and emergencies, there are a number of hospitals and medical centers in Central Falls. There is Notre Dame Hospital, Carties Health Centre, Frigon Nursing Home, Harris Health Care Center-North, Mansion Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Paquette Nursing Home and Rose Cottage Health Care Center. Roads and highways in the 2006 Government expenditure budget were allocated $1,347,000 ($69.38). The total number of bridges is seven each with a cumulative length of 25 meters. This is according to National Bridge Inventory (NBI) statistics which also indicate that the total average traffic in a day is 58, 189. SOILS Soil is one of our most valuable natural resources on earth and it is either directly or indirectly provides the populace with food, shelter, and fuel needed in each and every day living. Soil serves as a medium for waste disposal and serves the foundation for the homes that most of the Central Falls residents live in and the roads that they drive on. As a matter of fact, soil also provides the base for recreational facilities and is a determining factor in any of their aesthetic surroundings. Many changes have occurred in Agricultural lands in Central Falls. In Narragansett, Horizon A consists of Top soil, Horizon B has the subsoil and Horizon C contains the substratum. The A horizon is usually the top soil or the surface soil and forms the layer of the soil which has the highest organic material of any mineral horizon and it is always at the top making a good profile of the soil. This horizon is the most active biologically since it contains plant roots, bacteria, fungi, insects, and small animals that are more common in the topsoil that in any other major soil horizon. The B horizon is referred to as the subsoil and usually occurs below the A horizon in Central Falls soils. In well-drained soils the B horizon is commonly yellowish-brown to reddish-brown in color. These brighter colors have resulted from the accumulation (illuviation) of iron oxides which were leached from the A horizon. The B horizon is referred to as the zone of maximum illuviation. Subsequently, there may also be an accumulation of metals such as aluminum, manganese, calcium, and clay in the sub surface horizons of some soils. The B horizons of soils is grouped as poorly drained and are usually gray because the lack of oxygen that prevents the oxidation of iron to a red color. The C horizon consists of unconsolidated material that lays beneath the A and B horizons. The C horizon is outside the zone of major biological activity and has been influenced by soil forming processes. In this regard, physical and chemical weathering has occurred to distinguish this material from the consolidated bedrock below. The C horizon material may have accumulated in place as a result of the bedrock breaking down or the action could have been caused by the strong movements of wind and water which play a significant role in creating the horizon materials. With similarities in physical, chemical, and other properties, the C horizon to the material from which the A and B horizons have developed, the C horizon has been commonly referred to as the parent material (William R. Wright and Edward H. Sautter). Understanding the material formation for any given horizon is very important for people studying architecture because it will be very valuable in their career lives in the future. HYDROLOGY This report highlights real sources of geologic and hydrologic information that is useful to water managers and consumers involved in the analysis, appraisal, development, and protection of ground-water resources in Central Falls. The analysis Central Falls into a sharp focus and small adjoining areas of Massachusetts and Connecticut, where drainage basins are used distributed within the three states. The information is therefore presented as a summary that is annexed in maps and reports that are prepared by the U.S. Information sources are presented in maps and tables that represent drainage divides, town lines, and the 7.5-minute grid of latitude and longitude for the State. Maps show presence of ground-water studies by 7.5-minute quadrangle, and show availability of ground-water studies by drainage basin, sub basin, and special study area.   CLIMATE Central Falls as a city has a significant rainfall. Even in the driest month there is a lot of rain. This location is classified as Dfa by Köppen and Geiger. The temperature in this place fall into an averages 9.7°C. The average annual rainfall is 1191 mm. Precipitation is lowest in July and falls within the levels of 85 mm. Most of the precipitation here falls in November, averaging 119 mm. In the driest and wettest months, the difference in precipitation is 34 mm and throughout the year, temperatures vary by 25.0 °C. The pressure of the wind is 1023 hPa. Central Falls has two different climates that are classified as warm humid and hot humid continental climates. Generally, the climate is cold and temperate. Figure 1.0.
