The Earths polar ice caps have had dramatic changes in the past 12,000 years. Regular variations of the ice caps occur because of the varied solar energy absorption as the earth revolves around the sun. In addition to geologic time change, the ice caps may raise or minimize because of climate disparity. The melting of the ice caps in the north and south poles seem to be taken for granted by human beings. One of the foremost concerns should be the melting away of icebergs. Icebergs refer to massive floating amounts of ice. For icebergs to float, they displace a volume of water that has a mass equivalent to that of its own. Icebergs could contribute to a small portion in the rising ocean level. This is because they are masses of frozen glaciers that break away from landmasses and drop into the seas. The increasing temperature may lead to a formation of more icebergs through deteriorating the glaciers, making more cracks, and creating the possibility of ice to break. The moment the ice gets into the ocean, ocean levels go up a little. At the same time, as all of these issues are occurring, none of them seem to exist in isolation. They stand all interconnected and can cause a countering consequence to one another. The climatic alterations that are going on can have reflective outcomes on the Earth’s ecosystems, animal species, plant, and human health. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

The Melting of the Polar Ice Caps

... The melting of the polar ice caps Despite the conflicting resolutions made by environmental experts and scientists on the causes and extent of global warming, the sad reality is that global warming has been occurring and it keeps getting worse each day. The global warming phenomenon is not a virgin subject in the eyes of many. Various articles, reports and studies get carried out to try and establish its existence, progression over the years and its extent. Whereas these different studies conducted by different environmental organizations and experts all give somewhat conflicting information, they remain unanimous that global warming exists and that it keeps spiraling out of proportion each day (Littlefield 26). Without a doubt... the water...

Melting Pot

...? Due The American Melting Pot: Reality or Myth? Introduction When we look back on old documentary footage or watch period style movies we are often reminded of what the ports of the United States looked like at the turn of 20th century. People from all over the world came to this country with few belongings and a lot of big dreams of the better lives that they would build in this new land. They came to be free of the oppressions of their past and embrace the ideals and the freedoms of America. Ideally, these immigrants would bring the best of themselves, blend those talents, gifts and skills, and become Americans, sharing the unified hopes and greater goals of this country. The idea of the United States as an immense...

Polar ice and climate change

...? Polar Ice and Climate Change Over the years, studies have continued to illustrate the detrimental effects of the prevailing environmental degradation at the Polar Regions. This is as evidenced by the discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole and the reducing extent of the arctic sea. Consequently, there has been a rise in the sea levels owing to the melting of the polar ice cap, which in turn speeds up global warming. The Polar Regions are regarded as key influences of the world’s climate and with the melting of the polar ice caps has been attributed to erratic weather patterns. This is especially so with the ever increasing rate of melting attributed to the environmental degradation. For years, scientists have had their eyes set... voiced...

...The effects of shape of ice on its melting time. Different shapes of ice of same mass and density melt at different rates. This was proved by an experiment in which we noted the melting time of ice frozen in different shapes of medicine bottles. To carry out the experiment the apparatus we used included four medicine bottles with different diameters, water, glass, an ounce measure, freezer, ruler and clock. To perform the experiment we first numbered the four different medicine bottles. We then put 1 ounce of water in each bottle and placed each bottle in the freezer. Then we waited until the water in all the bottles froze and turned...

...Human Demographic Changes as a Result of the Ice Caps Melting Global warming is causing the ice caps tomelt in addition to many other climatic changes which will cause catastrophic consequences not only to people and property but to the health of the global economy as a whole. Entire sections of various countries will be forced to abandon their homes and businesses. The process will be a slow and torturous one. The greenhouse effect is a term that describes an increase of the average global temperature and is often associated with global warming which is the subject of great debate and concern worldwide. Studies have demonstrated that the past...

Melting ice glaciers due to global warming

.... (Zwally et al.) studied the volume of ice in Antarctica and Greenland over a period of 10 years. They made use of the radar altimetry for this purpose. The information gathered by them confirmed that originally collected by GRACE in the previous research. Pack ice conditions form habitat for a lot of animals. The pack ice in the seas is the fundamental source of food and habitat for the polar bears. As the sea ice is melting away, so is their habitat and they are likely to extinguish with the disappearing ice. Some wild life specialists are of the view that polar bears should be relocated to Antarctica...

The hunted organism or animal is referred to the prey. 8. What are the four main threats to the species? I) Climate Change As a result of climate change, the increasing global warming effect is destroying the habitat of the species. The species depend on the sea ice which is melted by the global warning. ii) Oil spills There are series of unregulated shipping in the polar region. Such activities often result in oil spills that that the polar bears. The oil spills also deplete seals which are the foods of the...

Hypothesis The null hypothesis is that the salty water would melt faster than pure water. The second hypothesis is that the more the impurities in water, the faster the melting point (Van der Put, 2013).
