Saudi Arabia is one of the water-scarce countries, along with many of its immediate neighbours, and all of them come under the MENA group.resources, however the MENA countries show a high density of population, about 6.3 % of the world’s total population, with the numbers rising every day. With this rapidly increasing population, the pressure on these regions to supply water to its citizens is also tremendously high, thus forcing each country to chalk out various strategies in order to develop effective water resource management.

The strategies drawn must be country-specific, suitable for the local conditions typical to those regions, which includes topographic conditions, the extent of water scarcity, financial resources, and technical competencies necessary to implement these strategies.Water, as we are well aware, is a precious commodity, and is known to sustain human beings, by helping in agriculture, and the subsequent economic development. However, the problem arises from the fact that almost 96.5% of the water available in the world is sea water or salt water, which is unfit for human consumption.

Only around 2.6% of the available earth water is fresh and fit for drinking and other uses by humans. Moreover, nearly 70 percent of this available fresh water remains inaccessible to man, as it is present in the form of glaciers and ice sheets and groundwater. Thus, only around 0.3% of the fresh water is available to man for use, and a large percentage of it is available from the groundwater, rainwater, lakes, and rivers.
