Annotated Bibliography
Electronic recycling involves the process of refurbishing and reusing electrical or electronic devices to prevent pollution in the environment. According to (Kahhat et al, 2012), electronic waste management is essential and should take a high precedent amongst both citizens and environmentalists. They also assert that recycling has numerous positive impacts on the environment such as reducing prospects of radiation, providing raw materials, and facilitating research among others. However, the authors lament on the methodologies that guide electronic recycling because organizations such as Basel Nation Network engage in informal recycling activities. This results to poor policies of protecting society from the dangers of e-waste.
Alternatively, other new perspectives of comprehending the implications of electronic recycling continue to emerge because of extensive research (Parsons & Oja, 2013). The writers cite military simulations conducted in the US that currently attempt to reduce equipment damage and physical harm to both soldiers and citizens. Overall, this safeguards the environment because a lot of computer materials are recycled for reuse in the facilitation of communication and surveillance unlike the disposal of such electronic gadgets. Similarly, electronic recycling through computer simulation nurtures potential environmentalists concerned with the total protection of their surrounding irrespective of arising costs.
In a symposium conducted by environmentalists and scientists, several issues emerged on the successes and failures of electronic recycling. According to (Zhang, 2011), the development of effective recycling techniques has resulted to the proper use of printed circuit boards (PCBs). This means success has been achieved in recovering hazardous soldering materials to assist in leaching studies. In the same perspective, the safe disposal and treatment of PCBs resin has heralded a novel way of recycling electronic materials. Unfortunately, some organizations continue to violate electronic recycling standards and this hampers success in reducing the organic swelling characterized by PCBs.
Therefore, environmental contamination and other aspects of toxicology are significantly finding mechanisms of reduction in spite of the challenges (Whitacre, 2011). Human exposure to environmental harm, in the writer’s context, has declined because of effective ethical considerations of managing electronic waste. As a result, this has reduced diseases vulnerability caused by exposure to radiation and others risks emanating from electronic waste. Susceptibility to exposure is equally reduced levels of carcinogens found in agricultural areas and thus thwarting the spread of airborne illnesses. Consumer awareness has also been fostered by electronic recycling hence ensuring that citizens are fully awareness of positive and negative implications on the environment.
It, thus, is fundamental for stakeholders to continue to supporting electronic recycling to sustain a healthy environment safe for living (Parsons & Oja, 2013). This is because electronic recycling is an easier process that requires the effort of citizens, scientists, and environmentalists by raising awareness and rewarding those who strongly protect nature from the harms of technology.
