Light Distribution in Dynamic Street Lighting Light is one the most crucial energy resource in the life of human beings and its utility is an issue of concern. In the strive to safe energy, there has been a notion that light should be utilized only when it is needed to avoid wastage and misuse. Previous research shows that there is a relationship between safety at night and the availability of street lighting. The main of this research is to investigate where pedestrians benefit most from street lighting and its relationship with dynamic lighting technology. The research hypothesis is that people feel more safe while there is light in the immediate surrounding than when there is more light in the parts of the road that lie ahead of them. In an empirical study, the research sampled a population of 29 women whose aspects of concealment, perception and prospect were investigated. The main findings of this research was that people prefer light in their immediate environment than having the path ahead of them put in front of them. The conclusion of the research is that energy wastage is avoidable by illuminating only those parts that are sufficient to ensure the safety of a traffic user. Associations of Perceived Social and Physical Environmental Supports with Physical Activity and Walking Behavior There has been a prevalent idea that physical activity in human beings plays a great role in prevention of chronic illnesses. The main of this research was to investigate the perceived social and environmental; supports for physical activity and walking. For the purpose of this research, the research team evaluated the perception of a sample of population from the eastern county. The sample population was categorized according to the extensiveness of their physical activity and their walking patterns. The research categorized the population in terms of their age, gender, education and race. The research design took a statistical approach as multivariable modeling was the main data processing approach. The main findings of this research is that increased awareness is one the best ways to increase physical activity and that adequate lighting in the playgrounds and sports fields would foster human activity. In tandem with the hypothesis developed by the research team, there is a positive relationship between perceptions of social and physical activity and the walking behavior. This research provides a platform for promoting human physical behavior within the population. Effect of Lamp Spectrum on the Perception of Safety and Comfort at Night It is generally acceptable that lighting improves human safety, apart from the principle function of improving visibility. The main aim of this quantitative research is to investigate the how residents experienced street lighting in their neighborhood in terms of safety and comfort and appreciation. The research collected data from the responded in the immediate environment where different light sources existed. The sample population as divided on the lines of gender and age, and only those respondents that could express themselves well formed part of the sample. From the research, it was clear that people experience a wide range of benefits from street lighting and that this determines their perceptions of safety and comfort within their immediate environment. Majority of the sample population show that white lights has more benefits than yellow lighting in the society. This research is in line with the hypothesis that white light produces more brightness and gives the society a greater perception of safety and comfort. This research adds to the knowledge that exists on the relationship between street lighting and the nature of light spectrum. Environment and Behavior There has been an extensive stud of the relationship between human behavior and the lighting levels in open and entrapped spaces. The main purpose of the research was to investigate the extent to which light and entrapment and personal factors such as gender and the way they affect the feelings of safety and acceptability. The main hypothesis of the paper is that people of either gender feel less safe in lower lighting and high entrapment levels. In a quantitative method, the research collected data from 88 first year students from Dutch university whose age varied from 18 to 51 years. In a computer aided 2 by 2 by 2-mixed design, the sample population was required to provide a rating for the comfort and acceptability of the movie clip. After a statistical analysis, it was evident that the across all the genders, people feel more safe in more lighted environment are comfort decreases in more entrapped spaces. On the line of gender, the research team found that there was no gender distinction on the lighting levels. This research provides a ground for the design of the street lighting systems in consideration of optimal safety and comfort of the public. Improved Lighting and Crime Prevention Previous researches have provided a direct linkage between street lighting and the crime levels in the urban areas. The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between the improvement of the lighting systems and the level of crime in the community. The research followed a meta-analytic approach in which validated and credible sources abstracted and crucial information regarding light and crime levels collected. The main hypothesis of the research was that improved lighting reduces the level of crime in the society. The finding of this research is that improved lighting reduced crime in some areas but had not effect in some areas. In addition, in most urban areas, it was clear that improved lighting reduced one form of crime but had no effect on the other. The main conclusion of the paper is that a number of factors affect crime in the society and that light is not the only factor that influences crime level. However, the fact that lighting reduces crime in some areas, it is true that street lighting in a country is one way of fighting crime in the community. The research provides a good ground for which the community can use street lighting to optimize security in their community. Read More
