According to Walter, these areas experience earthquakes quite often since they lay on weak rocks and tend to break suddenly along the fault line (Walker, 2007). When the rocks break, these results in the release of seismic waves that shakes the ground resulting in an earthquake. I strongly agreed with the author when he said that an earthquake is capable of creating an island. This is because, when a severe earthquake occurs, this results in a massive movement of the tectonic plates beneath the earth.

This results in the shooting of gases and volcanoes onto the surface of the earth, which later cools down to form a small island. For instance, the 7.7 magnitude quake that happened recently in Pakistan is reported to have created a mud island off the coast of Gwada about 533 kilometers from Karachi, reveals Butler (2013). In addition, I agreed with Walker when he said that an earthquake is capable of destroying an entire city. This is because there are several cities that have been destroyed by severe earthquakes in the past.

This has particularly been so in cities that lie within the epicenter. Some of the cities that have been destroyed in the past by powerful earthquakes include Bam, Iran, Kobe, Japan, Guatemala City, Skopje, Yugoslavia, and San Francisco, just to name but a few.The meaning I have made from this book is that earthquakes can happen everywhere and anytime. However, the closer a place is to the seismic zone, the higher the chances of an earthquake hitting the place. In addition, the book teaches us the importance of preparing adequately for earthquakes.

This is because most earthquakes result in the destruction of properties and loss of lives. In conclusion, this book teaches a lot of earthquakes and its consequences. As a result, I would highly recommend it to young readers interested in understanding earthquakes. From the book, readers will be able to understand how earthquakes occur, why some areas are highly prone to earthquakes and the consequences.
