The author of the article, Henning M, discusses how we need to come up with a solution to the growing problem of waste created by man everyday. He lists the various ways in which everyday waste can be managed. According to him, solid waste management, sewage treatment, use of renewable energy, water treatment can help in waste management. Having discussed the main idea of the article I think it wasn’t very well written. Not just writer was in a hurry to include all the information but also he provided the incomplete information about each of the technique. Had he chosen to write about one particular technique and given details about that method it would have been a better article. Even if he wanted to include all the information he should have structured the essay well. He should have explained the waste that he was talking about and how a particular method is directed against a particular waste. However, he simply mixes it all. Having said that, his effort to provide information about the main methods is pretty commendable. I think he manages to correctly introduce the topic of waste management. He explains why we need waste management-for conservation of our environment. Methods like recycling are perhaps the best method for waste management. Further, water pollution can mainly be controlled through sewage treatment. Besides these methods solid waste management is a very important aspect to waste management since solid waste is generally ignored and it has been piling up over the years creating havoc in our environment. The author mentions the need of renewable energy. However, it is only related to conservation of environment and most would not consider it related to waste management. But I think the writer is clever enough to realize it as a secondary method to waste management. Since use of renewable energy sources would mean less use of conventional energy sources like coal and hence there will be less waste that is produced by conventional energy sources. The reason I mention this article here is because this article is a very optimistic article among all the pessimistic views that we hear daily. Perez discusses the issue of waste management in a better way than the previous article. He is not just able to mention why exactly we need to look for a method for waste management but in choosing to write about perhaps the newest technology of waste management he has saved the both his time and the time of the reader, directly jumping on the possible solution to the problem. He believes that Biosphere Technology or Biosphere Process System is a better option in waste management. After reading the earlier article, I can not help but compare this article to the previous article. This article was better structured and had a flow to it, the reason why I enjoyed reading it. The author describes that we need a means for waste management not just because our lifestyle leads to production of huge amount of waste but also because only a quarter percent of the waste we produce gets disposed properly. Most of this waste ends up in places like oceans, and other water sources, destroy our soil and result in pollution. Hence, it is imperative that we think of a way to discard all the waste produced. He further mentions that the usual methods of waste disposal like landfills and incineration have not been very successful since they lead to issues like global warming. Both the methods as is well known create a lot of load on the environment to get rid of the waste while incineration leads to air pollution. Since the author mentions such issues related to conventional methods of waste management, he is able to drag the attention of the readers to the fact that we need to think of alternative methods and such methods should be safe in that they should not destroy the ecological balance. Biosphere Technology is a new cost effective technology in dealing with solid waste management. “It can efficiently destroy waste in environmental manner, this technology can even convert the waste materials into marketable end products such as carbon black, high alloy steel wire, inert ash and green energy or electricity. Biosphere technology uses gasification process” (Perez, 2010). I think it’s the mention of a new technology that drew my attention to the article more than anything else. The prospect that new and better technologies can be made that are both cost effective and ecologically safe draws my attention and influences me to think of such innovative techniques. This article was an informative article that achieved its purpose of making people realize that waste disposal is a huge problem and that innovative technologies are the only way that can deal with the problem in an effective manner. 3. The author mentions how it is not the industries that are responsible for the huge amount of waste but the households that throw out daily waste and these remain unchecked while industries have to follow strict regulations. So he suggests that if waste is to be managed and the management should start at the very basic level that is with the household waste. Despite the topic not dealing directly with any particular method as such but I think that the writer is successful in putting up his view and it is important for us to realize that he is right to a certain extent. Industries are definitely responsible for the waste being produced; however, common people are just as much responsible for the waste. I mention this article here because of its uniqueness in handling the topic and I think the author in very few sentences makes his point very clear. 4. The author in this article discusses in a detailed manner about the procedure of waste disposal. He mentions the four major methods of chemical waste disposal. These are: on-site preparation, treatment and incineration, land disposal, and chemical waste recycling. The author discusses how industries treat the chemical waste. In on-site preparation waste is classified according to type and then sealed and then disposed of after storage in a safe place. Treatment and incineration involves reduction in the volume or toxicity of the waste material. Land disposal simply refers to the system of landfills. The last method mentioned is chemical waste recycling in which the waste is recycled so that the final amount of waste generated is less. It was the last method that seemed economically and ecologically the safest to me. “Chemical wastes can either be reused directly, as is the case with emission control dust that can be reinserted into a zinc smelting furnace without processing, or reclaimed, meaning that the waste needs some chemical processing before it can be reused.
