Polluted air and water can also prove a health hazard for Londoners suffering from respiratory diseases and other ailments, such as the eyes. Leading to damage in the quality of life and life itself in some cases (Anderson and Anderson, 1999; Andres, 1988; Artridge et al., 1966; Bourcier, et al., 2003; Kennedy et al., 1998; Klopfer, 1989; Quay et al., 1998; Rahman et al., 1998; Schwela, 2000; Versura et al., 1999; Waheed and Basu, 1970). For the reasons stated above this study considers the methods and approach of the Mayor of London in seeking to reduce air pollution in central London to below European Union thresholds. The study considers both the policy and the technological interventions. Project Aim and Objectives The aim of this project is to investigate whether the transport related aspects of the air pollution reduction strategy adopted by the Mayor are effective. This aim is supported by the following objectives: 1. To analyse the trends in new car fuel efficiency and hence overall fleet efficiency in the UK. 2. To evaluate the relative balance and importance of strands of the Mayor’s strategy including: 3. To determine whether any actions by the Mayor have encouraged the reductions of the emissions characteristics of vehicles. 4. To determine whether programmes for eco-driving have been effective. 5. To assess the value of some of the planning related aspects of the strategy. 6. To analyse data of air pollution levels in inner London and specifically the trend of air pollution at three selected central London sites with...
While improved vehicle emissions are not entirely the result specific government initiative, it falls to the administration of a major metropolitan area to find organizational solutions to mitigate the consequences of a pervasive problem, or taking best advantage of a given opportunity. In this regard the Mayor’s proposals and strategies are efficient. Measures have been taken to reduce the consequences of air pollution for those most likely to be sickened by it – elderly and children. And while not all vehicles responsible for the worst pollution can be immediately removed from circulation, a slow strategy to control high emissions taxis and buses has been implemented through the denial of licenses (in the case of vehicles over 15 years old). The administration has also paid to subtle problems that might not be readily apparent guards to sources of pollution, such as particulate matter from asphalt in areas of high vehicle traffic. An initiative to repair roadways on a regular basis minimizes asphalt erosion that contributes to the particles with the potential to damage the respiratory health. Non-exhaust emissions have been reported to yield equivalent particulate matter pollution as a car’s tail pipe. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Trams have been offering reliable transportation for quite a while now and they will remain a tool of choice for the ordinary commuter. However, the dream to own a car always lingers in each commuter owing to the fact that everyone would like to be picked from their houses and taken to their destinations at their own will. The above plan includes the government’s major policies in regard to the achievement of the specific target; this plan also indicates the level at which environment influences governmental decisions in Scotland; however, additional policies of such type would be developed – existing measures have been found to be inadequate for controlling the effects of transport on climate change. A series of potential policies of this type is suggested through this paper; it is concluded that existing measures taken by the Scottish government...
