The Conclusion: Data Sources and Their Importance 1. Introduction and Background: The Office for National Statistics (ONS) produced Census data during 2001 and updated it during 2004. ONS counted all people resident in the area at the time of the 2001 Census and were aged 16 to 74 years old. On the other hand, CACI produced A classification called ACRON categorizing all UK population into 56 types. CANI provides marketing research and consumer classification data. In the following I will present some data analysis based on 2001 census data and then some information from ACRON. This practice will help me in understanding the advantages and disadvantages of both the sources. 2. Qualifications: In the following I will present the qualification comparison between Kingston upon Thames (Kingston), London, and England. This comparison will reflect the overall situation of qualifications in the respective area, region, or country with respect to the percentage of all people. 2.1. Qualification Comparison: All Levels As Kingston is part of London region and London region is a part of England, for valid and vivid comparison I will convert those counts into percentage with respect to all people counted in that area. Further, for better understanding the data will be represented in bar chart. 2.1.1. table 1 Comparison of Qualifications : All Levels   Area Level Kingston London England All People 109058 5300332 35532091 No Qualification 18707 1257929 10251674 Level 1 13315 689228 5909093 Level 2 20116 904205 6877530 Level 3 13503 518624 2962282 Level 4,5 37698 1642467 7072052 Level Others 5719 287879 2459460 Data source: 2001 Census © Crown Copyright 2001 2.1.2. table 2 Qualifications Comparison Percentage : All Levels   Area Level Kingston London England No Qualification 17 24 29 Level 1 12 13 17 Level 2 18 17 19 Level 3 12 10 8 Level 4,5 35 31 20 Level Others 5 5 7 Data source: 2001 Census © Crown Copyright 2001 2.1.3. figure 1 Comparison of Qualifications in Percentage: All Levels Figure 1 reflects that in Kingston, trend of lower qualification is lower and higher qualification is higher as compare to London and England. For instance, no-qualification and level 1 qualification are respectively 17% and 12% as compare to 24,13 of London and 29,17 of England. On the other hand Level 4,5 qualification is higher in Kingston with the percentage of 35. Remember that level 1 is the lowest level of qualification in census and level 4,5 is the highest. Upon the basis of this data analysis I can safely conclude that level of qualification in Kingston is better than collective level of London and of England. In next section I will analyze whether this pattern have some correlation with economic deprivation or not? 3. Economic Deprivation: In 2001 census, for economic deprivation five key figures have been mentioned. In the following I will analyze three key figures i.e., All People of Working Age Claiming a Key Benefit(All Claiming), Jobseeker's Allowance Claimants(Jobseeker’s claimants), and Incapacity Benefits Claimants(Incapacity claimants). 3.1. Economic Deprivation Benefit Claimants in Percentage 3.1.1. Table 3 Economic Deprivation Benefit Claimants in Percentage Data source: 2001 Census © Crown Copyright 2001 3.1.2. figure 2 Economic Deprivation: Benefit Claimants in Percentage Table 3 and figure 2 reflect that Kinston faces relatively low economic deprivation. As compare to London and England. On the other hand England has highest percentage for incapacity claimants. If I add Jobseeker Claimants and Incapacity claimants, even then England has highest percentage(11), then comes London(10), and Kingston is at the lowest side(5). 4. Finding Patterns 4.1. Deprived total compared No-qualification Level 4.1.1. Figure 3 Deprived total compared No-qualification Level Figure 3 illustrates the relationship between higher economic deprivation and no-qualification. In Kingston, All people claiming any benefits are 8 percent and percentage of no-qualification is 17. Both the economic deprivation and no-qualification are the lowest in Kingston. On contrary, in England both the percentages are highest with 15 percent claiming benefits and 29 percent having no-qualification at all. 4.2. Economic Deprivation: All Claimant compared higher level(4,5) qualifications Now, I will compare the highest level of qualification with economic deprivation. 3.2.1 figure 4 All Claimant compared higher level(4,5) Kingston has the highest percentage of Level 4,5 qualification. And on the other hand, it has lowest level of percentage of all people claiming benefits due to economic deprivation. Whereas, England has lowest percentage of Level 4,5 qualification. And on the other hand, it has highest percentage of people claiming benefits. Thus, I conclude from this data that the areas have higher percentage of low levels of qualifications will likely to have higher economic deprivation. And the areas have higher percentage of high levels of qualifications will have lower economic deprivation. 5. Census Data and ACRON Census presents officially gathered facts related to certain area. It try to gather information from all population of UK and presents fact about a range of areas including health, economic, crime, education and many others. On the other hand ACRON presents a detailed description of the people of the area in a narrative form. They state the habits, hobbies, preferences, economic condition, and profession, of the neighborhood. They do not present just facts but they describe the facts. They draw a vivid picture of the neighborhood before the eyes of the reader. For example, while profiling Kingston upon Thames (KT1 2PS), they scale the income of the area and education level “very high”. Similarly, about KT1 2EE postcode area, ACRON tells that the people living in the area are 1.09% of UK population. 5.1. Areas of agreement ACRON draw much of its information from census. Like census, it presents information about the all population of UK. Both the sources present information about major public interest like education, crime, health. Both the sources are publically accessible and provide free of cost online access. 5.2. Differences Census classifies its fact into different categories like health, economics, education, etc. It presents no conclusion at all and readers are to draw conclusions own their own. Most importantly, it is a primary source of data and presents first hand data. It does not provide any description of that particular area. On the other hand, ACRON presents a more comprehensive picture by drawing information from “many million lifestyle surveys”(Upmystreet). 6. Advantages and Disadvantages of Census and ACRON 6.1. Advantages of Census: The most significant strength of census is that it reaches everyone with the same standard questions to gather data. It includes everybody and does not rely upon any limited sample It has comprehensive categories to access data on one hand and geographical distribution at smaller territory level. The data presented in census is objective in nature. Census gives me opportunity to draw some conclusions on my own. 6.2. Disadvantages of Census It presents data in a factual form and reader has to draw conclusion on her own. There is threat that she may not collect from wide range of data and hurriedly draw wrong conclusion. Though I can draw my own conclusion, I have limited options to manipulate the data. I am bound to the categories presented in the census. Census does not provide any description of the geographical area but some facts. The readers can not have clear idea about any area. All the data presented in census has single source 6.3. Advantages of ACRON: ACRON presents data from a wide range of sources including census It presents a descriptive analysis of geographical areas. It divides all UK population into 56 types that help readers understand about certain area. It describes hobbies, profession, economic condition of certain area that help readers to decide whether or not some areas is suitable for them. 6.4. Disadvantages of ACRON: Descriptive analysis of ACRON is subjective and dependent upon the judgments of ACRON’s researchers. It provides information with certain angle and the reader has no opportunity to draw his or her conclusion. 7. The Conclusion: Data Sources and Their Importance Both the Primary and the secondary data sources have their own importance (Walford ,2008). The same is true about ACRON and Census. I will prefer ACRON for personal and business use. Census can help me in further research and investigation. ACRON mostly provides information that can be helpful for general public and can provide assistance in business decision making. Census provides solid basis for any further development like ACRON. Thus, in my opinion both the data sources have their own importance. Work Cited and References Walford , Nigel . Geographical data: characteristics and sources.
