? Culturally and Linguistically Diverse and With learning Disabilities Full With respect to who are learning disabled (including the possibility of a specific reading disability): a. In what way does this exceptionality affect the individual’s literacy development? Students who have learning disabilities hinder can hinder their academic development as well as their social and economic aspect of their life and eventually, the emotional aspect. Having the difficulty to retain general information, this limits their understanding to bits and pieces which holds them to be able to effectively understand others and communicate their thoughts to others. Literal interpretation of written works also restricts them to understand emotions and to draw conclusions from written texts. The diversity of the requirements for understanding something demands effort from them which if not met could have the learner socially incapacitated. b. What instructional accommodations are generally recommended for students who experience this exceptionality? (For the sake of brevity, limit yourself to no more than three important accommodations. You do NOT have to elaborate, other than perhaps a sentence for each one.) To help such students, teachers are encouraged to give explicit instructions made simple so that the learners can be able to follow. Daily reviews would be a great help to assist them in retaining information that are important especially in the learning process. Since the understanding of a learning disabled student is limited, modeling is very helpful as it would be easy for them to understand what they see put in action than things expressed in words. 2. With respect to students who experience ADHD: a. In what way does this exceptionality affect the individual’s literacy development? For students with ADHD, their learning development could limit them to the very few things that they able to concentrate on. As ADHD learners usually have difficulty in focusing to a certain task, the possibility that an assignment could be completed could be far from possible. They usually exert more effort in keeping still to finish a certain task especially when it comes to writing so their communication skills can be affected. Reading could be a lesser trouble for them but being unable to concentrate in the task also affects their understanding as well as the acquisition of important information received in reading. b. What instructional accommodations are generally recommended for students who experience this exceptionality? (For the sake of brevity, limit yourself to no more than three important accommodations. In order to help ADHD students, support and flexibility is needed to maximize the learning experience of a student as no assimilation can take place when one is forced to learn when he is not able to concentrate. Learners must be observed individually and considered in accordance to their interests. Generally, they get attracted to colorful books so these can be used to engage them in the process. With the short span of time they are able to invest on a task, it is important to give them short activities allowing them to learn in every activity they do. 3. With respect to students who experience autism spectrum disorders: a. In what way does this exceptionality affect the individual’s literacy development? The literacy development of students with autism spectrum disorder could have a pronounced delay because of their condition. Since they are not able to fully understand figures of speech whether expressed verbally or in written form, great communication gap could arise. Multiple word meanings get them confused so that their words are limited, thus their understanding and expression are equally limited, eventually affecting their social performances leading them to avoid contact with other people. b. What instructional accommodations are generally recommended for students who experience this exceptionality? (For the sake of brevity, limit yourself to no more than three important accommodations. You do NOT have to elaborate, other than perhaps a sentence for each one.) Visual learning is an effective tool used to help students with autism spectrum disorder to help them understand and retain words. Since change is difficult to such learners, consistent instructions and routines are essential to maintain to help them remember instructions and be comfortable with the learning process. 4. With respect to students who are linguistically and/or culturally diverse: a. In what way does this exceptionality affect the individual’s literacy development? Students who are linguistically and/or culturally diverse could delay an individual’s learning development because more time would be demanded for reading, writing and vocabulary building. In contrast to a native speaker, linguistically diverse students have to exert more effort in comprehending written and verbal communications. In addition, they would also find it difficult to express themselves accurately in a different language especially when it comes to vocabulary. Such students will have to search for the right words to use in expressing their ideas wherein in many cases, limited vocabulary prove to be a great hindrance to such a process. When reading, writing and word assimilation are supposed to be developed, they are instead compromised in exchange for the desire to let the student understand first of all the learning process he is undertaking. On the other hand, inferential skills are compromised when the three aforementioned skills are given more emphasis, thus, delaying the learning process. b. What instructional accommodations are generally recommended for students who experience this exceptionality? (For the sake of brevity, limit yourself to no more than three important accommodations. You do NOT have to elaborate, other than perhaps a sentence for each one.) For students who are linguistically or culturally diverse, content based teaching can be functional as a method to helping them develop in their learning. Modified guided reading could also be a great help for comprehension and build an individual’s desire to study with the help of the family in terms of this program. The case of diversity can be a disappointment to the learner so that family involvement can be a great help. In addition, reading programs and small group tutoring are also effective tools to use in helping multi-language students especially where a great number of them are in a school. 5. With respect to students with moderate to severe disabilities: a. In what way does this exceptionality affect the individual’s literacy development? Moderate to severe disabilities could slow down the learning development of an individual in terms of remembering acquired information as well performing in a normal setting. Difficulty in reading will limit the information they can have as well as their comprehension in addition to the longer period of time needed to figure out what is expressed in the written text. Repetition of instructions or lessons also delay the learning process because instead of moving forward to a higher degree of learning, the inability of a student to retain information calls for the need for repetition which is time consuming. Extensive practice could also be needed which could be tiring to a student so that a teacher who yearns for quality education has to concentrate on letting the student understand a little information rather than give generous information which are not assimilated by the student. b. What instructional accommodations are generally recommended for students who experience this exceptionality? (For the sake of brevity, limit yourself to no more than three important accommodations. Learning could be made easier for a student with disabilities through the creation of opportunities for them to learn like games and conversations. Activities should be framed to reach the level of the student’s understanding with short and easily understood instructions.
