In this regard, the writer appreciates the US President’s generosity for sanction a new budget to start these plants. Moreover, this essay is an appeal to the private sector as well as the government to invest in such a venture because although the stake of risk is high yet if the venture is successful the project can be very profitable and hence it is worth the risk.
In order to build an excellent and convincing argumentative essay it is necessary for the writer to take into account various aspects that are involved in the construction of a good essay. This includes the tone, style of writing, use of statistical data, and the art of building an essay on the basis of the data collected, targeting and securing an audience for his essay, etc. similarly the author of this article is also observed to be using such techniques as a result of which his essay provides the readers with a lot of a variety of aspects to be explored.
The approach used in depicting this essay is explicit because the article deals with a critical topic that can have hazardous effects if remedies are not taken. This essay reflects the writer's concern for his environment as well as the health of his fellow beings because he tries to convince the readers about the adverse effects of using fossil fuels in contrast to the benefits of nuclear power plants. As stated in the text, ‘nuclear power, which generates far fewer greenhouse gases than ordinary fossil fuels, should be part of the energy mix as this country Hence although he uses simple diction yet his perspective makes the readers consider their follies. In this essay is an amalgamation of statistical research and personal point of view as observed where the example of the ‘1979 incident at Three Mile Island is quoted. Yet at the same time analogies and facts are used to compare and contrast the state of his country with other governments without confining the comparison to a particular country. As mentioned in the article, ‘Other governments are enthusiastically embracing nuclear power as a way to lessen their greenhouse emissions and their dependence on imported oil. Hence the writer’s point of view depicted in this article is not only acceptable but also gives the readers food for thought and consequently results in convincing them.
The article very tactfully states all the pros and cons of starting a new power plant. The essay strategically first talks about the importance and the benefits of nuclear power plants and gradually moves towards the amount of risk and finance involved in this essay. So this gradual descent from glory to risk is a good strategy on the writer’s part. As stated, ‘…with advanced designs, new construction techniques, and strong oversight should be even safer… The tab for a new reactor can run as high as $7 billion to $8 billion, and overruns can add more. There is a long lead time before a plant starts selling power and paying returns. The target audience of the writer appears to be the investors of the private sector as well as the government officials who are responsible for providing assistance to the citizens of the country in beginning a new venture.
The tone of the essay is formal since the target audience is also a group of investors and government officials. The use of a formal tone helps in enhancing the overall impact of this article on the readers since the purpose of this article is to attract the citizens of the United States to invest their money in this venture it is necessary to use formal language in order to make them consider the writer’s appeal. The technique of using a dilemma is observed to be used in the article i.e. first the essay states the need for nuclear power plants yet the lack of them in the country, the number of profits that can be gained yet the risk involved also the interest of the investors from the private sector but the lack of finance or vice versa. As he says, ‘the risks are worth taking to get the United States back into the game, for the sake of the climate, this country’s energy future and the jobs a vibrant nuclear technology industry could create.’ The author is observed to be using ethos since he demonstrates his good intentions through his personal perspective of the situation of his country and the importance of changing the particular situation. The article establishes the fact that both the government and the residents would have to work in a harmonized manner to make this project successful as one is incomplete without the other.
