Brief Background of Abraham Lincoln History denotes that Abraham Lincoln was a great president in eighteenth century in the United States. Apparently, history denotes that he was the 16th president who served the country from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. It is during his regime that Lincoln led the country through the Civil War as one of the worst war to happen in the country and hence prevented the country from being torn apart (Raatma, 2001). Additionally, Lincoln is documented to have come from a poor family, a situation that forced him to be a self educated lawyer at about the time when his political career began. Essentially, his political career began when he became a state legislator and the party leader for the then infamous Whip party, in 1830s. He soon after became a member of the Congress in 1840s where he promoted the modernization of economy and related issues. Consequently, his career grew overwhelmingly until he secured a presidential nomination through the Republican Party to succeed Thomas Harris as president in 1860. The most imperative issue about Abraham Lincoln is that from the onset of his career, he was determined to end the menace on slavery because he insisted that since he was not a slave then, it was not human for him to become a master of slavery. Communication between Abraham Lincoln and his followers Apparently, the leadership of Lincoln is one that has been argued to be of absence in today’s corporate world. Scholars have articulated that, as a leader, Lincoln was able to efficiently communicate with his followers in the largest part of his regime (Raatma, 2001). Firstly, it is believed that he was a master communicator in such a way that he emphasized on the vision of making the United States a country where people would live was more free. Thus, his visions were simplified and conveyed to his followers through a language that was easy to understand. It is worth noting that his effective communication skills were demonstrated through the use of a language that was participatory, and the passion that was present in his subject. Secondly, Lincoln was believed to be a leader who dealt with controversial views on various political, social, and economic aspects. Conversely, he was an individual with great listening skills in such as a way that his followers were free to oppose his ideologies without the fear of retaliation. In some situation, he would listen to his followers and then take time to deliberate and come up with decisions that were relevant and of interest to the followers (people) of United States. Of importance to note is that, his listening qualities were built on the use of meta and micro message, which entails the use of tone, pitch and the overall delivery of the messages, and strategy that he mostly used during his forums. Moreover, Lincoln ensured that he created a space for both his followers and his few critics. These dialogues were meant to allow people give their ideas and opinions on particular issues. Finally, psychiatrist have argued that most leader with good communication skills are individuals who have demonstrated high levels of emotional control especially when communicating with their followers in open debates. In light of this, Lincoln is said to be an individual who was a master in emotions. As a human being, he went through emotional imbalances such as fear and self doubt, but he demonstrated a high degree of humidity and toughness through maintaining and creating a clear vision for his country and having belief that were not easily unraveled (Raatma, 2001). Effects of the Abraham Lincoln’s decisions It is for undoubted reasons that Lincoln’s regime is argued to be one of the best in the history of most presidents in the United States. Additionally, it is during his regime that the longest war- Civil War was fought. Basically, it is said that the Civil war came as a test of his leadership as a President, a situation that demonstrated his quality as a good leader. For instance, during the Civil War it is documented that he carried on with the war despite the fact that his generals were not willing to fight, bickering from some of his cabinet members, threat of assassination, and other intimidating factors but he fought on and won the war. Another effect of Lincoln’s decisions particularly in the political aspect is that he paid more attention to the federal government of the day and even assisted in strengthening it. This ensured that there was equal sharing of national resources. Moreover, he ensured that the economy of the country had been modernized to improve the life of fellow countrymen. In the same way, his good leadership was demonstrated by his fight on the abolishment of slavery in United States. Although he was first met by criticism and opposition, he was able to contain the inhuman culture. Of most importance is that, Lincoln as a president made several decisions in political, social and economic aspects. Abraham Lincoln’s effect on the country and how it will be seen in future According to Raatma (2001), the regime of Abraham Lincoln had numerous effects both positive and negative that are necessary in future. Apparently, most of the effects of Lincolns regime such as his leadership styles: authoritarian, democratic and hand -off style of leadership are some of the qualities that has been emulated by many leaders across the world including the current president of the United States, Barrack Obama. Another effect of Lincoln regime is that he was one of the presidents that used wise quotes during his regime. Today different politicians across the world have continually used his quotes in the political arena making verification on the fact his quotes are among the most referred-to quotes in the world. It is also documented that he was also capable of containing the Civil war through the fight and making sure that the country did not tear apart .This effect is relevant today as most countries especially in the third world have been faced by endless war that have threatened to tear them apart. While some countries have contained such wars others have lost the battle and led their countries apart. Hence, the Lincolns effect serves as a lesson on the importance of fighting on despite opposition and criticism.
