Zhao Kangdi ENG 101 Prof. Hoff 11 June Future Career s of higher learning have enabled to develop themselves so that they can become resourceful members of the society. Globalization has ensured that those students who invest greatly in technology have better chances in managing the challenges of the modern world. Technological innovation in the field of business is required to drive change in the highly dynamic business world. A case in point is the Apple Inc. under the stewardship of the late Steve Jobs, which has been one of the most innovative technological companies to emerge in the last thirty years (Gobble 63). The success of this company saw it post tremendous profits, and hence became an envy of other blue chip companies. One is convinced that the most appropriate career that fits one’s interests, skills and abilities is business management. A degree in business management provides the necessary theoretical framework that would prepare one to be qualified and competent in meeting challenging demands of the global environment. As such, a career in business management would hone skills for innovation. Innovation involves risks and uncertainty, and a good innovator should know the keys to success factors, and also how to handle and manage risks successfully. The ability to guide a business organization for innovation hence implies that one should learn to accept uncertainties, and at the same time to also learn from failures. Likewise, by pursuing a degree on business management, leadership skills are effectively developed. Business leaders in organizations have the ability to promote and drive innovations through leading the process and thus establishing a culture of innovation. Innovations can be initiated from the top of the organization or at a lower level. The best strategy of inspiring innovation can be through articulating vision that the people can identify with, and generating excitement and commitment. One can also consider the issue of role modeling so that those to be inspired notice sincere commitment through involvement. The ability to listen, show empathy and understand, while at the same time showing confidence in the ability of individual to perform also helps to inspire innovations in a team. One can also go further to coach and guide the team that is involved with innovation, which inspires the productivity. A degree in business management would provide students with opportunities to learn management theories and develop strategies to apply these concepts in real life settings. For instance, one of the courses taught from the business management program is managerial judgment and decision making. From this particular course, students are given academic and practical experiences through case studies where students get to pinpoint the root causes of managerial problems, get to identify alternative courses of action, evaluate the options using analytical tools, and make a viable recommendation. It could be noted that many ideas lead to various concepts which generate a number of projects that do not succeed in the market. When projects move from one stage to another, investments by companies for such ideas grow, and most companies are always forced to select the projects that have the likelihood of succeeding. However, there are instances when companies have to make the bold decision to stop the projects that are only eating into their investments, with little likelihood of succeeding (Herbold 1). Through learning the analytical tools of decision-making, students who aim to be future business practitioners are provided with the necessary guidelines and strategies to assist them to decide in the real world setting. Likewise, it is evident that in the contemporary setting, organizations venture and expand its operations in the international markets. The course on business management would prepare students to expand their current business knowledge through modules on international management, complex organizations, business law, issues in management, and even human resources management and globalization. The increasing demand and challenges posed by global organizations require that people bring the totality of who they are and actively involve their minds and become totally committed to the business (Freiberg 17). To be learned from the course, good business leaders must maintain a proactive stance by scanning the external environment, assessing the organization’s resources, and using management theories to move people towards the achievement of organizational goals. The linking of theories to real life situations would be addressed by a degree on business management. There are universities that offer management internship programs which further develop knowledge, abilities and skills of students to enable them to get a first-hand experience through working with contemporary organizations. This experience would provide on-the-job training and the opportunity to assess current skills that were developed and those that need to be enhanced. Concurrently, contenders for managerial positions after graduating from the course are provided with vast options for various career paths that include jobs in various industries and sectors. Graduates of a degree in business management get to be employed in manufacturing organizations, hospitals, hotels, service organizations, and other large global institutions. As noted from the Eller College of Management, for instance, “among the many types of occupations are: project manager, small business manager, human resource administrator, management analyst, EEO officer, regional operations manager, production manager, retail store manager, territory sales manager, and hospitality manager” (University of Arizona 1). The diversity and variety of options make the profession highly productive and preferred. Finally, the mediam pay for human resources managers, for instance, was revealed to be $99,180 per annum as of 2010 or about $8,265 per month (US Dept. of Labor). When one searched on the jobs with high pays in the United States, it was revealed that from among the top 10 jobs noted, five belong to the managerial position, to wit: Chief Executive Officer (top 2 with the highest salary of $140,880 per annum; an Engineering Manager (top 3 with the highest salary of $140,210); Computer and Information Systems Manager (top 8 to receive a highest salary of $100,110); Marketing Manager (top 9 with a highest salary of $100,020); and Natural Sciences Manager (top 10 with a highest salary of $97,560) (Highest Paying Jobs in the U.S.). The differentiating factor from fresh business management graduates and these positions receiving some of the highest salaries in the country is specialization, training and experience. For the Natural Sciences Manager, for instance, the training time was noted to be six years; while that of a Chief Executive Officer, training time was noted to vary. As emphasized, “in the corporate world, a bachelor’s degree is almost ubiquitous and it is encouraged to obtain an MBA, though it’s not necessary -- we all know that Bill Gates is an inspirational dropout” (Highest Paying Jobs in the U.S. 4). It is therefore evident that with proper training, experience, and equipped with the theoretical background, graduates of a business management course could rise along the organizational hierachy and receive some of the highest salaries among the jobs in the United States. When individuals, especially students, are making career choices, they are faced with challenges of choosing the most promising areas that can assure them of job satisfaction, better pay, and commitment to serve the community. The current essay hereby achieved its aim of indicating that the most appropriate career that fits one’s interests, skills and abilities is business management. Through providing the theoretical framework; opportunities to enhance leadership skills, among others; learning strategies to link theories to practical applications; preparing students to be holistically equipped to face challenges in global organizations; and being provided with wide career options and exemplary remuneration, one is convinced that the business management career is the profession that would help achieve both personal and professional goals.
