My name is Marcus Rivers and I have a dream. I dream of being a radiologist and a doctor. I want to help the sick. Since I was little, I have always been fascinated by the way doctors heal the sick and save lives. Watching doctors work around their patients and doing something to make their lives better fueled my dream of becoming a radiologist and then enter the medical profession one day. Yes, I know that becoming a radiologist and a doctor is not easy and I may face a lot of obstacles along the way but I am confident that I can hurdle all these challenges. Since I was small, I keep telling myself that no matter how difficult and no matter what kind of challenges may come between me and my dream, I will conquer it. I fully understand that there is no gain without pain and if I work hard enough and stay on the right course, I could make my dream come true. I know deep in my heart that by becoming a radiologist and a doctor, I could be of service to humanity and I could do more to make the lives of others better. My fascination with radiology and the medical profession started when I was still very young. My mother has RA (Rheumatoid arthritis) and watching people like mother struggle with RA is painful for me. I usually accompany her during doctor’s visits, MRIs and x-rays. I used to beg her to take me along during these trips so that I could observe the way doctors go about their jobs. During those visits to the doctor’s office, I fell in love with radiology and the medical profession. I find radiology quite intriguing. The fact that doctors can diagnose changes in my mother’s condition and keep track of her illness by observing the condition of her bones enthralls me. I believe that with the use of the latest technologies, we can catch diseases at their early stages and help patients recover faster. Moreover, as we enter into the digital era of modern medicine, radiology can be a great tool to reduce the sufferings of people. Radiology is an ever evolving field and every now and then, there are some exciting developments in this field that could change the way doctors treat diseases. I want to be part of that kind of dynamic profession. The idea of change does not scare me and I love to embrace positive changes especially when that means bringing better services to the people around me. To fulfill my dream, I will need to go through college and get a degree. I believe that I am ready to tackle the challenges of college life. Why? I was home schooled for 10 years through Penn Foster High School accredited courses. During that time, I was determined to be good at almost everything I do. I developed a great sense of responsibility and self discipline. You see, when you are home schooled, you do not get the same kind of push that you get from a regular school. Unlike in a regular school when you have teachers and peers to help you along, you are mostly on your own when you study at home. You do not have schoolmates who cheer you on when you hit some rough spots. Yes, you can always communicate with other home schooled students online but that you only get limited support from them. Online interactions are not really as intense and personalized as face to face encounters. Studying at home has its distinct disadvantages but it also has its own merits. Studying at home means you only compete with yourself and it is up to you to observe strict self-discipline. You learn to manage your time when you study at home. As a home schooled student, you also need to work on limited supervision so you really have to work harder that most students enrolled in regular schools. You see, when you do not understand something about your lessons, you do your own research and somehow teach yourself what the lessons are all about. Yes, you can always ask questions from your tutors online but then again, your tutors may not be available to you all the time so it is still up to you to work the problem on your own. I must say that as a home schooled student, I learned how to improvise and be relatively independent in my studies. I am proud to say that I did a good job at keeping myself on the right track. In fact, I received my high school diploma one year ahead of my class with a 3.2 GPA. I have proven to myself, to my family and my peers that nothing is impossible if you put your whole heart into it. While I was studying high school, I was also doing my share of community service. My parents believe in a holistic self development and I agree with them so I volunteered as a bible instructor. Since I do not go to a regular school, volunteering with the community gives me the opportunity to be with other people. I spend 50 hours a month spreading the word of God and helping other people. I give home bible studies and help people find meaning in their lives. In my own small way, I know that I am contributing to the community by serving as a good role model for the youth. Being able to work with different types of people everyday at the community is a blessing it itself. You see, you never really know how it feels to be truly human unless you watch the sufferings of others. Finding yourself in tight situations that ask for your sound judgment give you the opportunity to learn what is really important for you and for others. As a community volunteer, I get to see the real face of life which opened my eyes and made me a better person. I know that what I have learned from my students will help me through the rest of my life. The kind of faith and empathy that I witnessed as a volunteer bible instructor is something that fuels the soul and enrich the spirit. My work as a volunteer bible instructor is important to me. Technically, I am both a student and an instructor in this case. I teach people about the bible and in return, I learn from my students how to be a better Christian and leader. I cannot emphasize enough the degree of learning that I get out of my volunteer work. I learned so much about life from my students. They taught me the real meaning of “respect for life” and empathy. Being with my students allow me to see life at different perspectives. When I am with a student who is physically challenged, I see life as a day to day triumph and everyday is a kind of celebration. Watching some of my students deal with what seem like insurmountable obstacles for them gives me more faith in humanity. On the other hand, when I am with a student who is a dreamer like me, I see the world as whole new ballgame where everyone who is determined enough to succeed will be able to reach their goals. The whole community volunteer experience awakened in me a strong sense of responsibility which is essential for the medical profession. I understand that when I enter into the medical profession, I will be asked to make difficult decisions and without strong values I may not be able to do the right thing at the right time. With my community experience, I am now confident that I can meet the moral and ethical demands of the medical profession. I may not be what people would call a “sure winner” but I believe that I can be as good as everyone else by working hard and keeping strong faith in what I do. I work hard, I take full responsibilities for my actions, I understand that life will not give me special treatments and if I do not give my studies all that I have, I may not realize my dreams. I am already at the threshold of fulfilling my dreams and if you would help me take the first step in crossing that threshold, I would be eternally grateful. If I get the Raising Stars Scholarship, my dream can become a reality. Again, my name is Marcus Rivers, I have a dream and you have the power to help me realize that dream. Read More
