The whole action takes place in the springtime of a certain year in the 1890s, in the duration of about an hour, in a home belonging to the Mallards. The entire of these feature of setting become very relevant and important as the meaning of the story disclose (Deneau, 2013).
Chopins "The Story of an Hour" uses setting to reinforce or develop their theme. This is evident from a number of several situations that Chopin puts in his work. For instance, the connection in marriage collapse if the couple does not really love each other. This story has settings, for instance going into the social situation of a relationship, however, some contents and ideas of the setting of every setting has distinction. The story’s theme is expressed by the setting, for example social environments as well as time, in which the story is set. In "The Story of an Hour," Chopin, being the author, make use of the 1900s in order to express the theme of the narrative.
The setting in the story "The Story of an Hour" deals mostly with the social environment and nature of a couples affiliation. For instance, the "Story of an Hour" introduces to audience of a wife by the name of Mrs. Millard. She has heart disease. She discovers her husband had passed away in a railroad accident from the words of her sister Josephine. However, Mrs. Millard act in response in a different way most perplexing. "When she forsaken herself a little supposed word escaped her vaguely parted lips. She said it over and over beneath her breathing: "free, free, free!" in (Chopin, 2001, p.15). Instead of sobbing in pain for the loss of her husband, she jumps into a state of joy for the reason that liberty steps in her living.
