Character Analysis Colonel Sartoris Snopes Theme song: “Burn It Down” by Linkin Park. This song narrates a person’s experience of aiming high and trying to live a dream yet getting crushed and toppled by the person he respected the most. The song says, “..I believed when you told that lie/I played soldier you played king” (22-23). The boy always obeys his father especially during the first barn burning but he is dismayed by the second incident. The song says, “The cycle repeated as explosions broke in the sky…” (l.1-2). This reminds readers of the barn burning experience of Sartoris being repeated. The song is specifically apt for the ending of the story where he walks out and gets lost in the woods, not knowing where to go. Similarly, the song expresses “As the flames climbed into the clouds/I wanted to fix this/But couldn’t stop from tearing it down” (13-15). The boy wants to end his father’s activity of burning barns of people who mistreat them. However, he could not do anything about it. He is too powerless. Quote/motto: “Be honest, even if others are not, will not and can not.” This quote exemplifies the reason why the boy runs away from his family. He cannot take his father’s ways. Instead of staying home, he decides to inform Major de Spain about his father’s plan although it is too late and the barn has been burned. That night he decides to squeal about barn burning, he is full of frustrations yet stands for what he believes in even though his whole family is against it. Favorite movie: “Far and Away” starring Tom Cruise because Sartoris seems to face the world alone at the end. The line that says, “He did not look back” implies that he departs from his family and starts on his own. Indeed, it would be difficult for him to come back to them knowing what he has done. In the movie, Tom Cruise does not actually run away from his family but he needs to survive on his own, thus travels to America. The film is fitting for the boy wants to prove himself and start a new life. TV/film character most like: Huck Finn. Sartoris is almost of the same age as Huck Finn although he is not that smart. Both do what they want to do and are not afraid to stand for decisions they make. Abner Snopes Theme song: “Titanium” by David Guetta. This song talks about how strong a person is despite his sufferings. In the story, Abner experiences demarcation and brutality of his society, especially of those in the higher ranks but such are also due to his own ill doing. He is indifferent as he lets his hog roam around people’s farm, dirties an expensive rug, and burns barns of his enemies. For the crimes he commits, he is belittled, detested and sued, to which he responds with a more sadistic blow but not in front of his enemy. In the song, the speaker also experiences blows by people around him, yet remains strong and undefeated. Quote/motto: “Live like there is no tomorrow.” This motto reflects a person who is unconcerned about tomorrow or the future of his family. He lives by his anger. He destroys the barns of his enemy because they make him sick and he knows that even if he appeals to authorities regarding the charges against him, there will be no justice in the end for a man like him. Favorite movie: “The Crow” In this movie, the main character takes revenge on people who have wronged him. Just like the Crow, Abner makes his enemies suffer and does his crimes at will. TV/film character most like: Abner can be compared to the character of Daniel Craig in “Cowboys and Aliens.” Both are very manly, strong and determined to avenge their families. However, emotionally, Abner is more close to “The Crow” because he chooses to take revenge and still expects to be favored by his family. As a father, he also reminds readers of Harry Wormwood because of his disregard of his youngsters’ feelings. Lennie Snopes Theme song: “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence. This song talks about a woman begging to be brought back to life or hope. The word “life” is a metonymy to light. Lennie needs to find herself in order to protect her children from the harsh treatment of her husband. She could disgust feminists by not doing anything to stop her husband create damnation for the family. The line of the song that says, “Save me from the nothing I become” implies that she knows her husband is evil but cannot do anything about it. Quote/motto: “Life is a bed of roses” With the kind of life that Lennie lives, it is understandable why she would think this way. Lennie is a poor woman and suffers a lot from poverty to emotional pain. Nevertheless, she always stands by her husband because of fear and authority issues. She accepts the idea that life is a bed of roses because she is a product of a patriarchal society where women live to serve men and die poor because they cannot do anything about their fate. She is a real damsel in distress. Favorite movie: “The First Wives Club.” This movie tells about the story of three women who changed their life by rebelling against or going against the patriarchal dictatorship of society. Lennie will love this movie because she wants to break free from her husband’s power. TV/film character most like: Slim in “Enough.” Slim is similar to Lennie. She has no power because she does not make the living for the family. Like Lennie, Slim takes abuse from her husband, usually psychological abuse because she loves her family and cannot let the children be in the care of their father. “My Papas Waltz," by Theodore Roethke  Father Theme song: “Tears in Heaven” by Eric Clapton. This song mirrors the thoughts of a father who feels sorry that he did not give his son what the latter deserves while he is still alive. The father in the poem may not be feeling this way but this will be his theme song if he learns about the agony of his son as expressed in the poem. Quote/motto: ““If we don’t shape our kids, they will be shaped by outside forces that don’t care what shape our kids are in.” by Dr. Louise Hart. This quote explains that kids are parents’ responsibility. The father in the poem disciplines his son hard because he does not want him to grow up lazy and nonsense. However, the repercussion on the boy is negative. He feels crashed and torn, thus uses sarcasm throughout the poem, such as calling his father’s way of beating him up “waltzing.” Favorite movie: “Water World” This is a story of extinction, and may be favored by a father who sadistically treats his kid. In the movie, we see the character of Kevin Costner as an unemotional being who cares only to live (breathe, drink, eat) but only for himself. The father in the poem will like this kind of movie because he is insensitive to the feelings of his son. TV/film character most like: Pap in Huck Finn because he is always drunk and batters his son. Also, he could be Mariner in “Water World” because of his toughness, insensitivity and physical agility. Child Theme song: “The Blue Flashing Light.” This song narrates domestic violence the way it happens with the persona in the poem. The father gets drunk and hurts his children. The persona will like this song because it mirrors exactly his experience. Quote/motto: “In three words I can sum up everything Ive learned about life: it goes on” by Robert Frost. Despite the hardship he experienced, he has to go on with life and leave the past behind. Although this is not expressed in the poem, the persona’s existence signifies that he has lived on despite the pangs he kept. Favorite movie: “Life is Beautiful.” This will make the persona teary-eyed after watching because he will envy the boy whose father sacrificed for his son. He will look up to the father in the story while detesting more his own father. TV/film character most like: The little boy seems like Huck Finn in the “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” because his father is always drunk and hurts him before going to bed.
