Energy flow in natural ecosystem Through photosynthesis, the sun as a source of energy is transformed into starch by plants through photosynthesis. Therefore, the plant is the primary source of energy; this energy is thus transferred to various organism in the ecosystem. However, energy flow can be represented using a number of diagrams using food chains, food webs, or energy pyramids. Amount of energy reduces as one moves from one level to the next. Interconnected food chains hence serve as the best model to explain the flow of energy within a natural ecosystem.
Finally, energy pyramids show the amount of energy emitted at different levels of energy. As you can see in the graph, it is decreasing the number of energy supply in joules as one move up the picture of the pyramid. These are accredited to the fact that as energy moves from one level to another, it would have been utilized to some extent in the lower level. Hence, the remainder is passed on to the next step. For instance, herbivores eat plants, use some of the energy before giving the remainder to omnivorous and carnivals.
Decomposers are microorganisms that break down dead animals and plants into simpler compounds a nutrient to growing plants, they complete the vicious cycle. Thus, they are too very important in the completion of the energy production cycle. They bring forth the remaining energy from the dead animals and plants to be utilized during photosynthesis. Bacteria and fungi feed from the decomposing materials: thus, they are in their millions on the earth surface.
