Among those who lost their lives at Charlie Hebdo shooting were three well-known cartoonists and an editor. Two police officers responding to the raised alarm also died.

A major police operation was started immediately after the attackers left the building to find the two people who are said to have fled by car. According to BBC News, this assault was no doubt an act of terrorism and the French government termed it as one of the deadliest in the country since 1961 (para 3). The masked gunmen got to the building, opened fire using assault rifles, and later exchanged fire with the police in the street before escaping. The car they used was later found abandoned in Rue de Meaux in Northern Paris.

The reason for the hit is said to be the hatred of the Charlie Hebdo cartoons, which make jokes about Muslim leaders and Mohammed. This magazine has had a controversial history due to its continued ridicule of Islam and various leaders who subscribe to the religion. BBC News says that the publication had gone to an extent of displaying Mohamed in one of its covers in 2011 (para 5), something prohibited in the faith. The aggression was, therefore, a way of silencing it and showing disapproval of its work.
