What Is the Best Age to Start Learning a Foreign Language? by There is a common opinion that the earlier a child will start learning a second language, the more proficient he/she will become. However, researches claim that it is a myth because young children can easily mix their native language with a second language. That is why it is more reasonable to start learning languages at a teenage age or in early adulthood because up to this age people are usually motivated. Moreover, teenagers and adults can use their knowledge about a language structure, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary.

Most people believe that little children are better in language learning. Nevertheless, teenagers and adults have more chances to succeed in language learning because they are already familiar with the concept of language on the example of their first language. Older learners rely on the knowledge of their first language when starting a second language. It prevents from mixing two languages which is common for little kids. Another point is motivation-the older the person the better he/she understands why he needs certain language.

So early adolescence is definitely the best age for studying the second language.
