Reaction paper – The House we live in After watching the documentary, I think the brings forward one of the best ways through which a specific portion of the community takes advantage of another. Although racism is not biological, whites take advantage of it so as to discriminate others and to secure favors for themselves. This is why the author states that benefits accumulate on the side of the white people. However, this is not because they are hard workers but because they are simply white. From a personal perspective, this is one of the most unfair ways of treating people. This is because people should benefit from what they earn. Nevertheless, this is not the case as non-whites get fewer benefits although they may have worked harder than whites may. This form of treatment is present in most societal settings such as housing, customs, and even in courts. It is heartbreaking to find out that non-whites are not favored even by the government. This is because they are even denied citizenships for the mere fact that they are non-whites. At one point, a court had determined that the definition of whiteness depends on the comprehension of the white man. This implies that even the courts are giving the white man an opportunity to discriminate the non-whites since the white man would have the power to determine who is white and who deserves certain favors. This is happening even in employment places where whites are allocated the most prestigious positions although they may have lower qualifications as other non-whites. This is a form of modern day slavery where certain individuals are slaves in free countries. These behaviors happen especially in the countries that pledge fair treatment to noncitizens. This implies that racism and discrimination on grounds of skin color is an indication of hypocrisy. Personally, I do not think that race should ever be considered when offering citizenships or when giving out any opportunity. This is because all people are equal and should be treated as such.
This behavior of race-based favors brings additional problems such as inequality in the society. For instance, when comparing white and black families, one can note the huge differences beginning with both groups’ net worth. According to the documentary, the net worth of an average white family is at least eight times higher as compared to the black family. In the same way, the houses being sold in white dominated areas cost a lot more than those in black or even Hispanic neighborhoods. This and other differences do not translate to higher performances by the white population but the lack of opportunities for the non-whites. This is because most of the opportunities are reserved for the whites. Since these behaviors are passed on to the next generations, it continues inequality in the society and shapes the availability of opportunities for all members in the society. Discrimination is one of the modern aspects that affect productivity in the population. This is because most employers reserve positions for fellow whites not because they are better performers but because they want the white population to remain on top of other races with regard to net worth and overall income. This also advances inequality creating hostile environment between races. This may affect the overall functioning of a country. It should be eliminated to favor the establishment of a fair society. This is How We Live

...?This is How we Live Having been born into this current generation, I do not really give the lifestyle a second thought. I grew up surrounded by the luxury of automation and would most likely be lost if I were left to my own devices in the event that a gadget, app, or technology has not yet been invented to do something for me. I barely use my hands these days except to type away on my laptop or swipe away on my tablet PC. Other than those activities, I think my fingers would begin to suffer from rigor mortis. After reading the chapter “This is How we Live” in Ellen Degeneres' book “The Funny Thing Is”, I found myself contemplating her thoughts on the matter of how our life has become so easy that it has produced a generation of dumbed...

We Dont Choose a Life, We Live It

... Information We Don’t Choose a Life, We Live It We all agree on the fact that we cannot take the life we live, or at least I intend to demonstrate that. But how we live the life that we find ourselves in is what differs greatly among us humans. If we all were to choose where we want to be born, which family will raise us up, the mistakes we will commit along the way, then life will be boring and lose the excitement we experience around us. In fact, by living our life, we get to make decisions; decisions that shape and change our lives in ways we never knew existed, while at the same time we get to know and embrace our strengths, weaknesses and differences. Whether we believe that the life we have comes from God or we evolved and Mother...

We live in a layered world

...Essay We live in a layered world' It is true that we live in a layered world, our earth's surface remain terra incognita to-day, for ease of movement and other technological developments have made possible an almost comprehensive knowledge of the terrain, much of which is now accurately mapped. Not least in importance is the contribution made recently by aerial surveys, which, besides speeding mapping, frequently reveal previously unknown features and are often used in the detection of valuable mineral deposits. All this vast range of knowledge serves, among other things, to emphasize the great physical diversity of the home of man. The pattern of human activity on the earth's surface is the result of the initiative and mobility of man...

Do We Live in an Information Society

According to Boyd and Ellison (2007), the network society is comprised of production, power and experience, which build a culture of virtuality in the universal surges that transcend time and space.
Since the latter years of the twentieth century, it has become humdrum for critics to announce that the world we live in is an information society. Therefore, if this is wholly genuine, then we must certainly have key ramifications for the information sciences. It is beyond hesitation that social concerns impinge upon the work of information intellectuals and professionals similarly. As we look at the definitions of what an information society is, it is important that we first put into account the nature of, and standard for, an in...

Every individual represents one identity or another. Intersectionality is always not just how we see ourselves, but more of how the world itself sees us. The world tends to see every one of us from points of views that define our gender, nationality...

Do We Live in an Information Society

We have been listening since our childhood that man is a social animal. This fundamentally means that “man cannot live alone—he must enter into a relationship with his fellows if he is to develop and maintain adequate mental and physical health.” (Catt, 1962). Man feels an intrinsic urge to socialize not only to meet his physical requirements but also to achieve moral and mental satisfaction and development. Communication opens doors to new information, and thus, people tend to update their knowledge. However, communicating with others was never as easy as it is today. With the advent of technology, barriers to effective communication have been significantly removed and the process of exchange of information has...
