These programs test their patience and resilience on difficult tasks that they are likely to encounter in their college or work life. With a whole year’s worth of patience and resilience, these teenagers are better able to handle themselves without any supervision and avoid getting into trouble. They can handle the challenges they will encounter in trying to figure out how to be on their own (Kenny and Gallagher, 2003).
They are also taught on projects such as disaster services and being environmental stewards. This is therefore a learning opportunity for them that teach them to be responsible individuals on issues to do with the environment as well as on how to manage disasters as they try to become better citizens (Kenny and Gallagher, 2003). 18 year olds are still yet to define themselves as adults even though some of their actions are childish. When considering someone that provided community service, the person that was interviewed was a friend of a friend whom is a school superintendent at a very small school in the Midwest. This paper is written with the intention to introduce Kenneth Dudley (personal communication, November 3, 2011) and describe his contributions of community service through his occupation as a school superintendent.
Even though, many people including the students have characterized community services as a form of punishment for convicted criminals, several researches have established that community services help students to make moral, developmental, academic and cognitive growth from participation in these services.
This ensures that instead of whiling away their jail time, offenders actually had a chance to give back to society by engaging in service and contributing by their work to help others in need. Service ranges from a wide variety of subjects and is not exhaustive in nature.
The foundation of community service lies on the virtue of charity and importance of having a work ethic. Schools that encourage their students to partake in community service aim at inculcating a sense of responsibility towards their neighbors and the environment in general.
Researchers have tended to agree that the program was effective in avoiding overcrowding in prisons. As community service garnered support from social theorists, some hypothesized that its reparative element was could serve a similar purpose as serving a sentence in prison basing their argument that a single deed has the potential to become a chain reaction that transforms into a major accomplishment in a community (Arrington 23).
For example, the learners and the teachers in planning, business and law schools are more likely to get exposure to a variety of materials on negotiations, which will enhance their leadership and performance in community service (Schmueli, Warfield & Kaufman, 2009).
Diplomas are not awarded to students dodging the service. Under the new proposal from the school board all teenagers would be required to complete fifty hours as a volunteer working with accredited local voluntary organisations.
This would indeed prove to be a learning experience for the students, as they'd get a first hand knowledge about the lesser privileged class of our society, the pain of the sick, the sufferings of senior citizens, concern for the environment, requirements of homeless and destitute etc.
To complete my community service, I decided to work in a Mosque as a cleaner. The cleaning of the mosque is usually done by the worshippers. When I requested permission from the Imam, he gladly welcomed me to offer my services. In this place, any contribution made by an individual is highly appreciated.
