 1) The article was chosen because it is an important topic and it shows a different perspective of tourism. There are many articles which address the benefits of tourism to the economy of the country, but there are not many articles, which take into consideration the costs the country has to bear because of tourism. Moreover, it provides an insight into what should be done for the purpose of making sure that tourists shouldn’t harm the resources of a country. I found it interesting because it is a common perception that tourism is good for the economy, however, this article provides a different view of how tourism harms the economy of a country, in terms of resources. 2) The purpose of the article is to spread awareness about the ways, tourism can harm the traditions and resources of a country. Every tourism agency focuses on attracting tourists to their country, while they should also be educating tourists on how they can be respectful towards the resources of the country they are visiting and not waste water or electricity, while they are on the tour. 3) The audience for this article are tourists, who move from country to country in order to explore different places. However, if we go deeper into the article, the audience is also the tourism authorities of the country, who should make sure that whenever people come from other countries, they don’t waste country’s resources, tourism doesn’t become the reason for reservoirs being damaged or crops being destroyed. It is for the tourists understand that they need to make better choices, when they are travelling to some place. 4) The thesis statement of the article is in its introductory paragraph, which states that, “Tourism has seriously damaged, fragile ecosystems like the Alps-the winter skiing playground of Europe-and the trekking areas of the Himalayas. 5) The writer begins by directly stating the problem which would be discussed in the article, tourism. The writer then defines and generalizes the different areas of the world which are threatened by tourism like the areas of Himalayas, dunes, mangroves and forests. The writer then changes his point from areas to how tourists are wasting water of the countries they visit and how this water is not available to the locals of the village. Moreover, the writer links water with electricity, as there are luxury hotels built for tourists, in which they stay; for hot water, electricity is consumed too. 6) The topic sentence of the first paragraph is, “Worldwide, it poses a serious threat to coastal habitats like dunes, mangrove forests and coral reefs. The topic sentence of the second paragraph is, “Throughout much of the world, but notably in southern and eastern Africa, tourism underpins the survival of wildlife.”. The topic sentence of the third paragraph is, “Transport is the world’s fastest growing source of carbon dioxide emissions; leisure travel accounts for half of all transport.”. The topic sentence in the fourth paragraph is, “But what’s the value of tradition if it’s kept alive self-consciously, for profit, and bears, little relation to real life-which, today, across the world, grows ever more uniform.”. The topic sentence in the second last paragraph is, “Awareness, certainly, is a step forward- the knowledge of what it means to be a tourist.”. The topic sentence of the last paragraph is, “The world, clearly, is not going to stop taking holidays-but equally clearly we can no longer afford to ignore the consequences.”. 7) The conclusion of the article is that people wouldn’t stop taking holidays, however, it doesn't mean that there can't be anything done about the way tourists spend their time in host countries. The focus of earning profit and promoting products should shift to people and places, because it gives more benefits and is cost-effective. 8) Even though travelling is a profitable business, there is an urgent need to consider the costs tourism brings to a country. The way tourists waste the natural resources of the country, is something which should be focused on, instead of how much income they are bringing into the country. 9) For text analysis, I chose the last two paragraphs. In my opinion, the writer has acknowledged the importance of tourism and knows that disregarding the benefits of tourism is not possible. The writer’s style of writing I thought provoking, as he shows both sides of the picture. In both the paragraphs, the writer have not adopted a negative attitude towards tourism, but has explained how it is harmful and how it is beneficial.
