This essay discusses the connection of gender and disability in Flannery O’Conner’s “Good Country People” by using Garland-Thomson as a lens. Flannery O’Conner in the book discusses the various prejudices that disability brings among society members, especially on gender. O’Connor proves a clear point of intersection between disability and gender.
This apparent debate garland Thomson also focuses on her essay. Garland-Thomson explains that "integrating disability does not obscure our critical focus on the registers of race, sexuality, ethnicity, or gender, not is it additive (Smith et. al., 80). This gives details how societies focus on disability and gender with no keen specificity on the women. There is one common denominator as far as social order workings are concerned and this centers on gender and its role in the society. In this respect, there is much debate going on concerning the relationship between gender and disability.
The concept of feminism features prominently in this debate and scholars have advanced different theories to support their claims. In relation to Hulga in O’Connor’s story, different views are presented across the family. Hulga does not have a notable strong relationship with the mother and there exist a cold interaction between the two. The mother does not understand how to face her child who is disabled. Consequently, there is also a poor relation between Hulga the protagonist and all the community members.
There are constant prejudices and scorn put on Hulga by Mrs. Freeman. Many of the community members do not understand how comments can affect Hulga’s feeling about the rest of them. For example, she has weird fascination about Joy’s leg and she is the reason why joy gets the name Hulga. She does not mind calling Joy different names
