Extract of sample "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

A mid summer nights dream is a play that was written by shake spear and it is about love. Hermia is a young woman in love with Lysander but the father has different plans for her. The general conclusion about the play is people are making decisions for other people and this is not going down well. This essay will discuss this generalization using specific quotes. The first instance is when Egeus’s who is Hermia father wants her daughter to marry Demitruis instead of Lysander whom she is in love with.

This decision is being made for her and when the father asks Theseus to intervene he says “To you your father should be as a god…By him imprinted” (Act 1, Scene 1). Another instance that people make decisions for others is Demetrius wants to marry Helena but since his father has asked him to marry Hermia then he has to obey.Another situation is where the decision to love is placed on a cupid. In the play there is a quote “Cupid painted blind. Nor hath love's mind of any judgment taste… Because in choice he is so oft beguiled ( Act 3, scene 1).

The writer of the play has bestowed the decision to love or not to love on cupid. This might not be a person making a decision for another but rather leaving this to fate.Theseues makes a comment in the last scene that says that people let fear distort people’s senses and make people see things that do not exist. In literal sense allowing fear make decisions for you is a sense of control. This quotes shows it “Or in the night, imagining some fear, How easy is a bush supposed a bear?” ( Act 5, scene 1)Work CitedWilliam Shakespeare's A Midsummer night's dream. Dir. Michael Hoffman.
