Summary of Tatar’s Text In this article on the fairy tales, Tatar recognizes that, throughout the life of every individual, there should be, to a certain degree, an event that transpires, which is to be desired when we are young. These are the things that make us fantasize about a life the young desire to be part of their lives. Tatar wrote on the fairy tales in the children’s life in many writings that included annotated classic fairy tales. This is where he described the anxieties of the young ones to get a life according to how they fantasized. Summary of the Little Match Girl As Tatar discloses the characteristics of the classic fairy tales, he hints on the inclusion of the “The Little Match Girl” as part of the very good examples. The little girl suffers a lot in her life as the father pushes her to sell match boxes in the cold. The suffering of the little girl is amplified by the health condition of her body. She is hypothermic and being in the cold for that late intensifies her complications. As the dusk gets close to cover the skies, the little girl is traumatized of her situation, and the possibility that the father could beat her up for not selling as many as required to settle the family needs (Behrens and Rosen, 296). The frustration in her heart infuriates her and gets her to the pavements along the streets. As she fantasizes on the best and desired life out of punishment and maltreatment by the dad, she gets into visions. The visions were linked to the effects of the condition she was in, hypothermia, but some counted real. She sees her grandmother in the tale as the only person who cared and never mistreated her in her life. And this has been part of her greatest desires ever in this irritating lifestyle. The conditions set for her going back home from the streets where she sold the matchboxes deprived her of any good reason to live under the sun. This forms the basis of her fantasies (Behrens and Rosen, 296-297). The frustration of the imagination of the situation of how it could be at home when she gets home without selling the expected amount of boxes gets her down into deep fantasies. She gets down onto a place within the street where she lights the matches as she visions her situation and links it to the desires that she wants to happen in her life. She lights her matches as she sees the Christmas tree as gorgeous and appealing to the soul. She then sees a falling star from the skies and this reminds her of the story the grandmother told her before she died. It was a signal that a person would die and was to be in heaven in a happy life. Of course, this is what she desires for. This thought of someone important dying and going to heaven does not scare her, and she surges on to light the next matchstick. When she lights the next stick she sees her grandmother, and she dies. All she ever wished to happen in her life was happiness in heaven, and the grandmother takes her soul with her to heaven. The fantasies of the girl remained true to her objectives and life desires as she was anxious to live a life without much stress but mostly, a happy life. The dreams of the girl, though in a great fantasy became real (Behrens & Rosen 294). Summary of Beauty and the Beast The film “Beauty and the Beast” is a romantic fantasy film that depicts the desires of a young girl to get her lover, the beast to become human rather than the creature he is. Before the prince was converted into a beast by an old beggar after refusing to have his rose for exchange to night’s shelter, he was a very handsome man. As the interaction in the castle intensifies with the un-expectations of the little girl, Belle meeting the beast, the knowledge about each other occupies their minds. At first she hates the kind of creature that she gets across when trying to rescue the father from the castle. The pain that Maurice, her father undergoes in the castle gets her angry, and this made her hate the beast most (Behrens and Rosen, 298). The situation turned out the other way round as the beast saves her when she almost got killed by the wolves in the woods. This happens when she tries to get back to the homestead to get to the family. She is attacked by the wolves as she rode past the castle territory on a horse. This was after finding the enchantress rose upon which the magic that turned them into a beast and other things lied. As she fights off the wolves, the wolves overpower her and almost kill her. The beast then comes to her rescue at the moment she needed help most. He wins over the battle on the wolves but gets injured in the process. The beautiful Belle then feels deep within her heart the responsibility to nurse the beast, and as she treat his wounds the little girl finds herself developing emotional feelings for the beast. They get to share romantic moments together in the times of that evening. The romance intensifies, and the feelings get to the point in which she desires the best man could come to show her the love that existed in the beast and the feelings to love the beast. She wishes that she could be having a handsome man to love and that anything could happen to change the looks of the beast. Belle feels great love for the beast and no one could get her off the feelings not even the men who had sought for her love. She got great fantasies on the condition of the beauty of the beast as she desired for a handsome man out of him (Behrens & Rosen 296). This comes true when a man who had been chasing her feelings and hand in marriage, Gaston stabs the beast at the back. Analysis of the Two Texts The criteria of classifying a story, movie, film or any other work as a fairy tale according to Tatar includes the ability of the tale to show the sufferings or desires to have certain conditions in the life of the main character changed. There must be fantasies for the best things desired; the situation must have certain repercussions so as to mend, and solutions should be provided within the story. There must be lessons learnt from the fantasies well as cautionary learning from the texts.
