What You Pawn I Will Redeem This is a very touching story intended to reach out to everyone in the society toand to call them to be considerate of the disadvantaged people such as the homeless. Despite these people lacking some things in life, they are still human beings like the rest of us; they have families, friends, hopes and dreams. Sherman Alexi’s story focuses on the plight of an Indian homeless man who has been through a lot in terms of relationships and jobs just like other people, but for some reason he is homeless on the streets.
The story adopts a resentful tone where the author is angry at the kind of treatment the society gives to the disadvantaged people while at the same time creating a remorseful mood for the most part of the story, where the author regrets some of the things he has done in the past such as causing heartbreaks to many women. The mood and the tone of the story have had a great impact on me throughout the story since they have made me to empathize with the author and keep me interested in knowing what happened next hence maintaining the urge to read on.
I agree with the saying that ‘the true purpose of art is to ask questions’ and the author has greatly fulfilled this adage. He invites us to ponder on how we treat the homeless people in the society and on other issues such as relationships and family. I would place the author in to the first quadrant of the artist/audience relationship diagram because he effectively manages to connect with his audience. The narrator’s grandmother’s regalia is unaffordable and this illustrates the level of poverty that most people like him face.
