AGRICULTURAL POLLUTION Agricultural pollution Thesis ment Agricultural pollution is caused by farming practices to meet the high demand of the basic need, food. The use of fertilizers and other substances are very harmful to human health. One of the solutions is to use organic fertilizers that release nutrients more slowly. Secondly, use these substances appropriate; avoid excessive use of fertilizers (“Life Of Earth”, 2013).The History of the ProblemAgriculture has been known to be the source of environmental pollution since time in memorial.
During the 18th C and 19th C, where there were revolutions in industrialization, famers still largely depended on natural resources for crop and livestock production (“Agriculture and Pollution”, n.d). Negative Effects of the Problem Agricultural pollution poses a lot of health complications to human life. These harmful substances contaminate drinking water sources upon entering the underground water which is the major cause of ‘blue babies syndrome’ (“Life of Earth”, 2013), some of these compounds cause cancer, others like nitrates cause dysentery and diarrhea.
In addition, “lesser ailments can be caused by eating vegetables washed in this polluted water” (Ahmet, 2011). There are also respiratory problems when pesticides are released into air. Accordingly, marine organisms are in danger when the water is contaminated reducing the amount of oxygen. Indirectly, human beings risk their lives whenever they consume contaminated crops planted using arsenic based pesticides and fertilizers (Ahmet, 2011). Solutions The best solution is to advise the famers to control runoff from exposed soil to prevent contamination of drinking water and other water bodies.
Secondly, scientist should invent new ways of promoting yield and growth of crops like use of organic fertilizers, free from attacks by insects so as to avoid using these harmful substances. Call to ActionFarmers should be educated on how to use these farming substances like using the required amount of fertilizer and never fertilize before the storm of rain. Additionally, scientist should come up with biological ways to promote crop production rather than use of pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides.
This will help eliminate these adverse effects of agricultural pollution.References“Life of Earth”. (2013). Agricultural Pollution.
