Sneiderman argues that such mistakes can easily be corrected by the individual if proper strategies are employed at the right time (Sniderman, 2011).
Apart from the simple slips, Sneiderman also notes that some are more serious and has the potential of tarnishing the company’s corporate brand. He groups the serious slips into five major categories from which he attempts to provide strategies that can be employed in order to recover from such social media disasters. The five serious social media PR disasters identified by Sneiderman includes inappropriate opinion, early release, hackings, the insensitive statement and false reward (Sniderman, 2011).
According to Sneiderman, the inappropriate opinion is that happens when an organization leaks inappropriate information that is likely to injure the organization’s corporate image or format. He argues that such errors occur when one posts information on the social network without proof reading and editing to ensure that all errors are corrected before posting. Regarding the insensitive statements, Sneiderman argues that such slips have the potential of tarnishing the company’s brand ethos. Early release disaster, in his opinion, takes place when a company’s sensitive information is leaked to the public earlier than intended. Sneiderman points out that leaking information to the audience earlier than intended may be disastrous to the company as it may affect the company’s operations. False reward occurs when a company deceives its customers by offering a deal, which it is incapable of delivering. Sneiderman argues that such deals may be made on the social media accidentally which may prove disastrous to the company. Finally, the hack, which he cites as being the most disastrous of all, but is easiest to correct (Sniderman, 2011).
